What is a carpentry apprentice?

Carpentry apprentices are individuals who are learning the trade of carpentry through a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction. They work under the supervision of experienced carpenters to develop skills such as measuring, cutting, assembling, and installing wood and other materials. Apprenticeships typically last several years and gradually increase in responsibility and complexity as the apprentice gains experience. Upon completion, apprentices become qualified journeyman carpenters.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a carpentry apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Carpentry Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of construction principles, measurement, and tool handling, often gained through a high school diploma or trade program. Familiarity with power tools, hand tools, and safety systems like OSHA guidelines is typically required. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure high-quality workmanship, safety on the job site, and ongoing professional growth as you advance in the carpentry trade.

What are some common challenges faced by carpentry apprentices during their training period?

Carpentry apprentices often encounter challenges such as mastering precise measurement and cutting techniques, adjusting to physically demanding work, and learning to use a variety of tools safely and effectively. Adapting to changing job sites and weather conditions can also be demanding. However, working alongside experienced carpenters provides valuable hands-on learning, and asking questions is encouraged to help accelerate skill development and confidence.

Description

Set the Standard for Every Showroom Kitchen We Build.

You've spent a decade mastering finish carpentry, and you're the person other carpenters ask when something needs to be exactly right. It's time to lead that work and get paid like the craftsman you are.

The Norfolk Kitchen & Bath has been building trust since 1934. As a fourth-generation, family-owned company, we design, manufacture, distribute, and install our own cabinetry throughout New England, giving you steady, year-round work and a recognized leadership role over our highest-visibility installs.

Why Join Norfolk?

  • Starting pay: $35/hour, based on experience
  • Full-time W-2 position (40+ hours/week)
  • Year-round work - no chasing the next project
  • Health, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • Paid Time Off
  • A recognized leadership role setting the quality bar for the Showroom division

What You'll Do

  • Lead installation of custom cabinetry, countertops, and finish carpentry on showroom and residential projects, including work in occupied homes
  • Study assigned jobs with the Project Manager to understand full project scope, timeline, materials, and subcontractor tasks
  • Own quality control and final walkthroughs for your crew's work; complete a full jobsite punch list at each phase and submit to the PM for review
  • Supervise the jobsite and uphold standards of safety, quality, and professionalism for all site personnel, enforcing OSHA safety practices
  • Mentor and train Apprentices, Level 1, and Mid-Level Carpenters
  • Solve complex fit-and-finish challenges independently; apply basic knowledge of structural framing and support systems, and safely assess non-structural vs. load-bearing walls when adapting plans on-site
  • Identify task strategies that align with project budget and scope; flag scope changes or unforeseen conditions to the PM before proceeding
  • Coordinate work sequencing to reduce repeat trips and increase on-site efficiency
  • Maintain daily documentation (time, photos, punch list items, daily logs) in our project management system
  • Manage site cleanliness and dust protection to ensure client satisfaction during occupied remodels
  • Ensure daily stocking and organization of tools and inventory on the truck; report needs to the PM or Construction Manager
  • Be the go-to expert Designers, Project Managers, subcontractors, and clients trust on site
  • Represent Norfolk professionally on high-visibility, customer-facing projects

Requirements

  • 10+ years of carpentry, custom cabinet installation, or finish carpentry experience, including work in occupied residential spaces
  • Proven ability to lead and train other carpenters
  • Deep experience with high-end or custom finish carpentry
  • Reads plans, blueprints, elevations, and job specifications fluently, no hand-holding required
  • Strong time management and organizational skills; self-directed and proactive
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and reliable transportation
  • Preference given to candidates with a valid Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License (CSL)
  • Ability to lift 75+ lbs and perform physical labor daily, including standing, walking, climbing ladders, stooping, reaching, and carrying materials
  • Must speak, read, and comprehend English; bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply
  • OSHA 10 Certification is a plus
  • Professional appearance and behavior required for working in client homes

We're Looking For Someone Who

  • Has led finish-carpentry crews, not just worked on them
  • Notices the details other carpenters walk past
  • Sets the standard other carpenters follow
  • Has zero tolerance for cutting corners on customer-facing work
  • Communicates calmly and professionally with homeowners, even when resolving on-site issues

Ready to Set the Standard?

If you're ready to lead the craftsmanship behind every showroom kitchen we sell, apply today and start building your future with The Norfolk Kitchen & Bath.
