Job description

JOB SUMMARY
The Carpenter1 is responsible for constructing, erecting, installing, and repairing structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, cement, and wallboard using carpenter's hand tools and power tools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using a ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge
  • Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws
  • Install structures or fixtures such as frames, floorings, trim or hardware, using carpenters hand tools
  • Build tunnel bracing or partitions in underground passageways to control the circulation of air to worksites
  • Build concrete forms for tunnels, bridges, power plants, or sewer construction
  • Help erect, level, and install building framework with the aid of rigging hardware and cranes
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks
  • Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company's safety culture
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • At least 3 years' experience as a Carpenter

SKILLS / KEY COMPETENCIES
    • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction
    • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
    • Knowledge of arithmetic
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
    • Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities

    • Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
    • Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Ability to operate job related tools
  • Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
  • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
