CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF AVIATION (CDA)

Starting Salary: $61.01/hr; Grade: PR

This position is open to all current city employees covered under the MID-AMERICA CARPENTERS REGIONAL COUNCIL- BARGAINING UNIT 50. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under general supervision, supervises journey-level carpenters performing rough and finished carpentry work in the construction, installation, and repair of various structures and fixtures, and performs related duties as required
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Inspects work sites to assess project size and scope;
• Prepares work orders and determines resources needed to complete jobs;
• Prioritizes, schedules, and assigns work to individuals or crews based on the extent of work required, urgency and availability of resources;
• Inspects work performed by Carpenters to ensure completion according to specifications;
• Manages and orders tools, materials and supplies through the warehouse;
• Prepares project status reports for the General Foreman and reallocates resources to ensure projects are completed in a timely and efficient manner;
• Supervises the implementation of work and safety procedures and coordinates staff training;
• Assists in the preparation of and completes staff performance appraisals;
• Initiates corrective or disciplinary action as required;
• Reviews and approves time and attendance records for approval by the General Foreman;
• Reviews and approves daily activity sheets prepared by Carpenters;
• Participates in construction and maintenance meetings;
• Manages in-house construction and rehab projects;
• Provides supervision in the absence of the General Foreman.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered Carpentry apprenticeship training program and journeyman status, plus two (2) years of journey-level carpentry experience, OR
Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are available:
Successful completion of a company or industry sponsored apprenticeship training program in Carpentry, plus four (4) years of journey-level experience in carpentry OR
Eight (8) years of journey-level work experience in carpentry
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required
The candidate(s) must obtain basic airfield driving certification within six months of appointment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Substantial lifting (up to 50 pounds) is required
• Ability to stand and walk for extended or continuous periods of time
• Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs
• Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and/or step stools
• Ability to access difficult to enter spaces (e.g., roofs, basements, cramped quarters)
• Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment
• Ability to tolerate heights while working
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires candidates to pass a skills test and complete an interview. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been compiled and analyzed. Applicants who receive a passing score on the test will be selected to interview . The interviewed candidate(s) receiving a passing score on the test and possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral interview and written exercise, will be selected for hire according to the CBA.
