Purpose

The responsibility of the Screener is to provide security screening to prevent the introduction of weapons, explosives and other deadly or dangerous items into the air transportation system by means of available screening equipment such as ETD, Metal Detectors, X-Ray and physical inspections. The Cargo Screener is Responsible for day-to-day air cargo screening functions as outlined by Nippon Express and the Transportation Security Administration. The screening provides security for the passenger and staff.

**All Screeners must be either a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident per TSA guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Identify prohibited objects in cargo by use of explosive trace detection, x-ray machines, physical search, Metal Detection and other methodolory as outlined by the Transportation Security Administration
  • Prepares and maintains required reports, forms, and records as required by Nippon Express and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
  • Physically inspects the x-raying cargo, crates, and other containers as required by the TSA
  • Courteously and respectfully interacts with Supervisor, Managers, and TSA Auditors while conducting screening activities
  • Verifies necessary documentation for transportation of cargo as directed by agents
  • Maintains focus and awareness while conducting screening services in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment
  • Takes proper protocol upon detection of a questionable or dangerous item
  • Immediately notifies Federal Security Director and/or Nippon Express Security Coordinator when necessary
  • Ensure safe handling of dangerous or deadly weapons/objects discovered until arrival of the Federal Security Director or Law Enforcement Officer
  • Maintains data log sheet daily
  • Treats all sensitive and company sensitive information as confidential
  • Ability to effectively communicate clear and concise information verbally and/or in writing
  • Reports all alarms and other major incidents to Supervisor immeidately
  • Ships and receives cargo according to the applicable regulatory and or voluntary association's requirements: TSA, C-TPAT and/or TAPA
  • Performs product selection and package preparation for shipment
  • Keeps Supervisor informed of needs and problems in screening areas
  • Communicaes safety hazards and equipment problems to Supervosr and Managers
  • Must be able to read, write, understand, and carryout instructions in English
  • Must adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Maintains cleanliness of immediate work area and reports maintenance needs
  • Must be able to travel domestically to attend required TSA trainings and conferences as needed
  • Other duties may be performed due to company and operation needs

Hourly Pay Range: $21.00- 23.00. This range is a good faith estimate of the expected salary range for this position, based on a wide range of factors including qualifications, experience and training, operational and business needs and other considerations permitted by law. At NEU, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for the role.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, equivalency certificate or significant relevant or appropriate working experience
  • Approximately 2 years department or industry experience
  • At least 2 years experience in air cargo handling
  • At least 2 years forklift experience
  • Must be able to sucessfully complete TSA training and pass the STA background application
  • All Screeners must be either a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident per TSA guidelines

Organization Relationships

  • This position will interact with all levels of employees at the branch, including colleagues, leadership staff, and office personnel.
  • Must be able to work with outside agencies (TSA, CTPAT, etc.)

Work Environment

  • Standing, bending, twisting, kneeling, reaching, repetitive use of hands, grasping
  • Pulling, pushing, lifting of up to 50 lbs
  • Picking, checking, repacking, palletizing, labeling, sorting, general warehouse housekeeping
  • Exposure to excessive noise in a fast paced warehouse environment
  • Use of equipment such as forklift, pallet jacks, shrink wrapping machine, RF scanner and all screening system modes (ETD machine, xray, EMIS, K-9)
