Cardiothoracic Radiology and Thoracic Radiology share significant overlap, both involving imaging of the chest. However, Cardiothoracic Radiology emphasizes heart and lung imaging, often requiring specialized cardiac imaging skills, while Thoracic Radiology broadly covers lung and chest structures. Both roles are vital in diagnosing thoracic diseases, but their focus areas and imaging techniques differ slightly.

Job description
UT Southwestern Medical Center | Dallas, TX
UT Southwestern Medical Center is the No. 1 hospital in Dallas-Fort Worth for the ninth consecutive year and ranks among the nation’s top hospitals for care in 12 specialties—the most in Texas—according to U.S. News & World Report. As a leading academic medical center, UT Southwestern is known for excellence in patient care, groundbreaking research, and a strong commitment to education and training.
Job Summary
The Department of Radiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas is seeking candidates for the Division Chief of Cardiothoracic imaging. This individual will lead the clinical, academic, and research mission of our cardiothoracic division.
Clinical divisional duties include supervising and interpreting cardiac and thoracic imaging studies, providing consultation to referring physicians, and performing various thoracic interventional procedures, if desired. Faculty members in the Cardiothoracic Imaging Division are responsible for clinical services at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Clements University Hospital, and affiliated outpatient clinics, which use state-of-the-art imaging equipment including the latest generations of CT, MRI, PET-CT, and PET/MR scanners, as well as enterprise-wide EMR, PACS, 3D processing software, voice recognition dictation, and other electronic resources. A fully equipped 3D lab supports the delivery of advanced cardiothoracic imaging services. The division has a track record of early adoption of multiple artificial intelligence tools in clinical practice such as those for lung nodules, pulmonary embolism, and coronary artery calcium, among others.
The candidate will have the opportunity to lead and collaborate with a diverse team of seasoned experts in the field of cardiothoracic imaging. The program proudly hosts two advanced fellowships—one in cardiothoracic imaging and another in cardiovascular imaging—training a total of five fellows annually. Specific clinical and research interest can be in any area within the scope of cardiothoracic imaging, and faculty members have access to high-level mentorship in the pursuit of scholarly activities. Candidate will also have the opportunity to work with residents and medical students in one of the largest diagnostic radiology training programs in the U.S, and additional residency programs in interventional radiology and nuclear medicine.
Faculty members have dedicated academic time with many opportunities to develop research interests in collaboration with our strong basic science group, as well as other clinical and basic science departments throughout the campus. Faculty members have access to dedicated research instruments including state-of-the-art 3T and 7T MRI, 3T PET/MR, hyperpolarized MRI, and PET/CT. A strong cyclotron and radiochemistry program provides outstanding opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations both within the department and with other departments on campus. Administrative (e.g., institutional review board [IRB] submissions, grant application and budget preparation, research coordinator support for clinical trials), research PACS for data storage, biostatistical and logistical support are available. Access to the institutional high performing computer cluster (BioHPC) facilitates projects related to AI and big data. Robust collaborations with imaging vendors enrich discovery opportunities.
