Job description

What the Senior Commercial - IP Paralegal (Non-Atty) contributes to Cardinal Health

This hybrid role offers the opportunity to make an impact across two high-value legal functions. You'll help power Cardinal Health's Intellectual Property Team, supporting innovative work across patent, trademark, and copyright matters while also partnering with the Commercial Team and Global Procurement Center of Excellence to help drive commercial contracting across the enterprise. It's a unique chance to work at the intersection of legal strategy, innovation, and business operations.

Responsibilities

  • Patent Prosecution Support. Contribute to the Company's patent procurement process by supporting in-house and outside counsel in the preparation, filing, and prosecution of PCT applications and related documents. Prepare foreign filing packets and all associated forms and correspondence, and manage the formalities required for foreign counsel to file and prosecute nationalized foreign patent applications. Review communications from outside counsel, identify required actions, and, at the direction of in-house counsel, provide clear, detailed instructions to move matters forward efficiently.
  • Intellectual Property Portfolio Management. Support the IP team in managing the Company's intellectual property portfolio by tracking and maintaining the patent docket and coordinating with internal stakeholders and outside counsel to drive key decisions. Prepare meaningful reports that help the business understand the content and value of portfolio assets. Partner with in-house counsel to develop materials for the Company's Intellectual Property review committees and provide the administrative framework that supports decisions related to patent filing and maintenance activities.
  • Supporting the Global Procurement Center of Excellence and the Commercial Contracting Team. Contract management, review, revision, and drafting including initial reviewing and redlining of commercial agreements (both direct medical sourcing and indirect procurement) under attorney supervision.Drafting responses to client inquiries related to procurement and commercial agreements.Creating reports, charts, and summaries on contract volume, status, and other metrics for the Global Procurement team.
  • Legal Workflow Coordination.Receiving and processing incoming contract requests, gathering necessary information, and routing matters appropriately.Using contract management and tracking tools to monitor contract status, deadlines, and key dates. Assigning contract matters to attorneys and tracking workload distribution.
  • Operational Excellence. Support Cardinal Health's operational excellence initiatives. Participate in helping define/execute team policies, procedures and best-practices necessary for the team and outside counsel to conduct procurement activities efficiently, accurately, on-time and with minimal waste/re-work. Maintain accurate contract records and databases.


Qualifications

  • College degree and/or paralegal certificate preferred
  • A minimum of 10 years of paralegal experience (with responsibilities similar to those listed above) in a law firm or corporate law department setting preferred
  • Established track record of pro-actively engaging outside counsel and business clients
  • Experience with intellectual property docketing systems preferred
  • Experience with patent annuity systems (e.g., Computer Packages Inc. (CPI), Questel, etc.) preferred
  • Experience with commercial contracts, including initial review and revision of Data Privacy Agreements, Business Associate Agreements, Confidentiality Agreements and Information Security Agreements preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, highly organized, motivated, creative and possessing exceptional attention to detail
