Work EnvironmentHospitals, cardiac centers, operating roomsHospitals, thoracic and cardiac surgery units, operating rooms
Industry UsageFocuses primarily on heart surgeriesPerforms surgeries on heart and chest organs

While both Cardiac Surgeons and Cardiothoracic Surgeons perform heart surgeries, Cardiothoracic Surgeons have a broader scope, including surgeries on the lungs and chest. Cardiac Surgeons specialize exclusively in heart procedures. Understanding these differences helps patients find the right specialist for their needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cardiac surgeon?

To thrive as a Cardiac Surgeon, you need extensive knowledge of cardiac anatomy, surgical techniques, and completion of medical school, residency, and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship, along with board certification. Proficiency with advanced surgical instruments, cardiopulmonary bypass machines, and imaging technologies like echocardiography is essential. Exceptional hand-eye coordination, stress management, and strong decision-making abilities set outstanding surgeons apart. These skills ensure precise, life-saving interventions and optimal patient outcomes in high-stakes environments.

What does a cardiac surgeon do?

A cardiac surgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in surgical procedures of the heart and its surrounding vessels. They perform operations such as coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve repair or replacement, and surgeries to correct congenital heart defects. Cardiac surgeons work closely with cardiologists and other healthcare professionals to diagnose heart conditions and determine the best surgical treatment for patients. Their goal is to improve heart function, relieve symptoms, and increase a patient's quality of life.

What are some common challenges cardiac surgeons face when working in a multidisciplinary team?

Cardiac surgeons frequently collaborate with anesthesiologists, cardiologists, nurses, and perfusionists, which requires exceptional communication and coordination skills. Challenges can arise when integrating differing opinions or treatment plans, especially in high-pressure situations like emergency surgeries. Maintaining clear and timely communication is essential to ensure patient safety and achieve optimal surgical outcomes. Building strong professional relationships and participating in regular case discussions can help mitigate these challenges and foster a supportive team environment.

Additionally, the program has been awarded the CommonSpirit Center of Excellence designation for isolated CABG (IsoCABG). We are consistently recognized by the Washington COAP surgery awards as a top-performing hospital for low mortality and high performance in key metrics, including the 2025 Cardiac Surgery Award. Furthermore, two of our surgeons were recognized as "America's Leading Doctors 2025 - Cardiothoracic Surgery" in Newsweek.

The SMMC campus underwent a $500 million expansion in 2020, and a new 74-bed North Tower opened in December 2025. The facility offers an incredible Pacific Northwest setting with mountain views. Our program features dedicated cardiac anesthesiologists, dedicated operating rooms, and specialized surgical teams. There is a strong sense of collegiality and teamwork in everything we do; our excellent outcomes are a testament to this culture and serve as the cornerstone of our program.
