What is a cardiac perfusion?
A Cardiac Perfusionist is a healthcare professional who operates the heart-lung machine during surgeries requiring cardiopulmonary bypass, such as open-heart surgery. They manage blood flow, oxygenation, and other vital functions while the surgeon operates on a still heart. Perfusionists work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other medical staff to ensure patient stability. Their expertise in advanced life-support technologies is critical to the success of complex cardiac procedures.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in cardiac perfusion, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Cardiac Perfusionist, you need an in-depth understanding of cardiovascular physiology, perfusion techniques, and a degree in perfusion science or related field, along with national certification (such as CCP). Familiarity with heart-lung machines, blood-gas analyzers, and other cardiopulmonary bypass technology is essential, as well as maintaining up-to-date credentials. Quick thinking, excellent communication, and strong teamwork skills are vital to excel in high-stress, surgical environments.
