Position: Structural Welder – Pulse Arc

Job Location: Newport News

Hutco Branch: Portsmouth VA

Rate of Pay: $45 per hour (perdiem Available for those who qualify)

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week – All Shifts
Security Clearance: Not Required

Position Overview

We are seeking highly skilled Structural Welders (Pulse Arc certified) for long-term shipyard work in Newport News, VA. Candidates must have extensive experience with multi-pass welding processes and the ability to pass all position weld tests without training.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform all-position fillet and butt welds using:
    • SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding)
    • GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding)
    • FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding)
    • GMAW-P (Pulse Arc Welding)
  • Use oxygen/propane heating torches
  • Air carbon arc gouging
  • Follow OSHA safety protocols for confined spaces, fall protection, and PPE use
  • Work in demanding physical environments (e.g., shipboard, confined spaces, heights, staging)

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 4 years of structural welding experience at NNS or naval shipyards
  • Skilled in:
    • All-position welds: 2G, 3G, 4G with SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW-P
    • Using fillet and butt weld gauges
    • Air Carbon Arc Gouging
  • Must pass:
    • Visual Inspection of Welds Level I
    • Welders Vision Test
    • Carbon Arc Gouging Proficiency
  • Mandatory: Pass weld qualification tests on-site at Newport News Welding School

Mandatory Safety Training & Qualifications

Leased Labor Provider must supply proof of completion/documentation for:

  • Confined Space Training – OSHA 29 CFR 1915
  • Hazard Communication – OSHA 29CFR 1915.1200
  • Respirator Fit Test & Medical Clearance (MSA Comfo Classic only)
  • Fall Protection – 4-D Body Harness, Lifelines, Beam Clamps (ANSI Z359.1 compliant)
  • Audiometric Testing & Hexavalent Chromium Clearance
  • Coveralls – Flame Resistant with long sleeves
  • Welding Shield Leather Bib and Full Jacket

Required PPE (Provided by Supplier)

  • White Hard Hat (with company name and worker’s last name)
  • ANSI Z87 Safety Glasses with side shields
  • 8” steel-toe safety boots or leather shoes with spats
  • Bilsom Leightning L1N Muff-Style Hearing Protection
  • MSA Comfo Classic Respirator
  • Flame-resistant coveralls and full welding jacket
  • Welding shield leather bib

Special Requirement

All candidates must pass the Pulse Arc weld test before assignment.
