Job description

The Saint Joseph location of Scrap Management Industries is seeking an equipment operator to work alongside our team. This position requires the expert, safe operation of various types of equipment to move, organize, stack, load and unload processed and unprocessed scrap metal.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Monitor and maintain all production equipment, i.e. material handlers, front end wheel loaders, track excavator with shear attachment, semi tractors, rail car mover, skid steer, balers, shears, etc.
  • Properly follow company and OSHA safety procedures.
  • Perform daily, pre shift inspections on equipment and report any defects or needed repairs to supervisor and clean equipment as needed.
  • Willing to cross-train in other positions and assists other employees as needed.
  • Ensure a clean, safe and orderly workplace; clean and prepare sites by removing debris and possible hazards.
  • Follow instructions from Shredder & Maintenance Superintendent.
  • Must be able to identify and sort various scrap metal commodities.
  • Safely categorize and stack scrap metal material.
  • Attend all scheduled training and meetings.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, non-stop environment.
  • Minimum of 1 years previous experience operating equipment (such as forklift or skid steer)
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to operate equipment under varying working conditions.
  • Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
  • Flexible to work off hours, weekends, holidays in an industrial environment which includes being outdoors in all weather conditions.

Working Conditions
Working conditions are normal for a heavy industrial scrap metal recycling environment. Working in this environment requires the use of personal protective equipment including but not limited to; hard hat, safety glasses, high visibility safety vest or clothing, gloves appropriate for the task, hearing protection, and steel toe work boots. As in most scrap metal recycling jobs, the environment can be loud/noisy and dusty. Most work is done outside, exposed to all weather conditions. Subject to regular bending, twisting, reaching, working overhead, working above ground and/or on irregular surfaces.
Physical Requirements
Lift and carry up to 50 pounds for long periods of time, sit or stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs daily to reach work area. Position requires individual to: sit, bend at waist, twist upper body, stand, walk, and/or otherwise move around scrap metal recycling yard environment up to 10 hours per day.
