Car Modeling information

What is car modeling?

Car modeling is the process of creating detailed representations of vehicles, typically using 3D modeling software or physical materials. These models can be used for various purposes, including automotive design, animation, video games, and advertising. Car modelers focus on accurately depicting the shape, structure, and details of cars, often collaborating with engineers and designers to bring concepts to life. This field requires strong skills in design, attention to detail, and proficiency with specialized software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a car modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Car Modeler, you need strong skills in industrial design, 3D modeling, and an understanding of automotive engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Proficiency in software like Autodesk Alias, CATIA, or Blender, along with knowledge of rendering and CAD systems, is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this field. These skills are crucial to create innovative, functional, and visually appealing car designs that meet industry standards and client expectations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in car modeling roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in car modeling often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, evolving design requirements, and the need for precise collaboration with both engineers and designers. Adapting quickly to feedback and changes is essential, as is mastering the latest 3D modeling software and staying updated on industry trends. Effective communication with cross-functional teams helps ensure that the model accurately reflects the intended design and engineering specifications, ultimately resulting in a successful final product.

Car design emphasizes the creative process of developing vehicle aesthetics and concepts. While both roles require CAD skills, car modeling is more technical, whereas car design is more artistic and conceptual.

How do you become a car model?

To become a car model, individuals typically need to have a good physical appearance, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and build a portfolio of professional photos. Many models start by signing with a modeling agency and attending casting calls or auditions specific to automotive campaigns. Relevant skills include posing, understanding branding, and sometimes having experience with photo shoots or runway work.

Job description

About Clutch:

We're on a mission to reinvent the way people buy, sell, and own cars. Are you game?

Clutch is Canada's largest online used car retailer, delivering a seamless, hassle-free car-buying experience to drivers everywhere. Customers can browse hundreds of cars from the comfort of their home, get the right one delivered to their door, and enjoy peace of mind with our 10-Day Money-Back Guarantee... and that's just the beginning.

Named five years in a row to the Globe & Mail's list of the Top Growing Companies in Canada and also awarded spots on Deloitte's Technology Fast 50 and Fast 500 lists, we're looking to add curious, hard-working, and driven individuals to our growing team.

Headquartered in Toronto, Clutch was founded in 2017 and currently services Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, and Prince Edward Island. Clutch is backed by a number of world-class investors, including D1 Capital, Canaan, Real Ventures, BrandProject, and Upper90. To learn more, visit clutch.ca.

About The Role

Clutch is building the largest wholesale and remarketing operation in Canada. In under three years, our wholesale business has grown from roughly 200 vehicles a month to over 3,000 - across auction, dealer-direct, and export channels in Ontario, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia - and we're scaling toward doubling again. We're looking for a Strategy & Operations Manager to help decide where the next chapter of Wholesale growth comes from, and then go build it.

This is not an advisory seat. You'll own decisions with real P&L consequences: how vehicles get routed across channels, where we invest in facilities and partnerships, and where the operation needs to get faster as volume scales. You'll work directly with the Director of Wholesale, and your work will go in front of Clutch's executive team - the bets we make will be shaped by the work you produce.

What you'll do:

  • Own the numbers: build and run the reporting and analytics layer for Clutch's Wholesale business, and turn it into decisions, not just dashboards. You'll define the metrics the executive team uses to judge the channel.
  • Optimize how vehicles move: design data-driven routing models across auctions, direct-sale, and export to maximize revenue per vehicle. At our volume, small percentage gains can be worth millions annually.
  • Make the machine faster: drive down cycle time across transport, operations, and sales as volumes scale. Find the bottleneck, quantify it, fix it.
  • Build what's next: evaluate and stand up new disposition channels and the infrastructure behind them: real estate, systems, and partnerships.
  • Run the operating rhythm: own business reviews, OKR tracking, and shape how performance is reported to leadership.
  • Lead special projects cross-functionally: take initiatives from ideation through execution, building consensus across Supply, Product, Marketing, Operations, and Finance along the way. You'll be measured on outcomes, not output.

What we're looking for:

  • 3+ years in strategy / management consulting, IB, or corporate development, or in BizOps / strategic finance at a high-growth company.
  • Sharp analytical instincts.
  • AI-native mindset - you use AI tools as leverage by default, not as a novelty.
  • A bias to action and zero ego about getting your hands dirty - you'll spend real time in the operation, not just modelling it.
  • A track record of owning ambiguous, cross-functional problems end-to-end.
  • The ambition to grow into a leadership seat, and the EQ to earn it.
  • Willing to work from our downtown Toronto Headquarters (60 Adelaide St)

It'd be great if you have:

  • Interest in cars, auctions, or the auto industry is a bonus - you can learn the rest on the job

Why you'll love it at Clutch:

  • Autonomy & ownership - opportunity to build your process and influence the company workforce and at every level.
  • Help shape the future of car buying and selling in Canada by leading a critical part of our customer experience.
  • We are dedicated to attracting and retaining top talent with top-of-market compensation packages.
  • Above market health & dental benefits.

Salary: $110,000 - $130,000 + equity incentives

Employment Type:

  • New, Permanent Full-Time

Clutch is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where all individuals have an opportunity to succeed. If you require accommodation at any stage of the interview process, please email talent@clutch.ca.
