We provide purposeโ€‘driven work in a safe and inclusive environment, and we live by our North Star. With us, your contributions matter โ€“ we want you to be empowered to innovate, collaborate, and ultimately drive results. We're here to partner with you so you can learn, grow, and forge a career that's meaningful to you. Join us in powering North America.

Director, US Thermal Business Development

Washington, DC (Hybrid)

Your Opportunity

Capital Power (TSX: CPX) is a growthโ€‘oriented North American power producer delivering responsible energy solutions across Canada and the United States. We are seeking a Director, US Thermal Business Development to lead the origination and execution of a multiโ€‘year pipeline of utilityโ€‘scale thermal generation opportunities across the U.S. This is a highโ€‘impact, externally facing role shaping Capital Powerโ€™s thermal growth strategy and translating evolving utility reliability and capacity needs into longโ€‘term contracted assets. This results driven leader will operate with significant autonomy - originating proprietary opportunities, building senior utility relationships, and advancing projects through financial close to drive meaningful capacity growth and longโ€‘term value.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Build and execute a multi-year development pipeline with clear line of sight to contracted MWs and financial close
  • Originate proprietary brownfield and greenfield opportunities, including site control and interconnection strategy
  • Define and execute market entry and origination strategies across key ISO/RTO markets
  • Lead and deepen executiveโ€‘level relationships with utilities, coโ€‘ops, and loadโ€‘serving entities
  • Convert utility procurement needs and IRP insights into actionable development opportunities
  • Lead crossโ€‘functional teams with direct accountability for advancing projects through the full development lifecycle. Own project execution, including business cases, financial analysis, and risk assessment
  • Structure development opportunities for successful contracting and commercialization
  • Provide market intelligence on capacity markets, regulatory shifts, and competitive dynamics
  • Influence strategy, capital allocation, and pipeline priorities with senior leadership
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's in Engineering, Business, Finance, Economics, or related field (MBA preferred)
  • 10+ years in power development, business development, or project finance with a strong U.S. thermal track record
  • Proven success originating and advancing projects through financial close
  • Deep, established relationships with utility procurement and executive teams (e.g., PJM, MISO, ERCOT)
  • Strong knowledge of ISO/RTO markets, capacity structures, and interconnection processes
  • Experience leading complex, crossโ€‘functional project execution
  • Advanced financial modeling, valuation, and investment analysis capabilities
  • Expertise in structuring and negotiating power sector commercial agreements
  • Technical understanding of thermal generation (peakers, CCGT, flexible capacity)
  • Executive presence, strong judgment, and an ownership mindset with the ability to drive results independently
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid office/work from home position
  • Ideally based in our Washington DC office; open to remote work consideration
  • This position requires up to 40% travel, reflecting the relationshipโ€‘intensive nature of utility origination across multiple US markets.
Additional Details

The pay range for this position is $190,000 to $250,000 for Washington, DC. The specific rate will depend on the successful candidateโ€™s qualifications, prior relevant experience and geographical location.

Benefits
  • This position is eligible for health care benefits, retirement benefits, paid time off, and annual bonus.
  • This position is eligible for a referral bonus.

Capital Power is committed to providing a fair and transparent hiring process. We recognize and embrace the value of diversity and hire employees with the appropriate skills, experience and knowledge for each position.

In order to be considered for this role you must be legally eligible to work in United States of America.

The successful candidate for this position will undergo an education verification, reference checks and criminal record check.
