Description
Housekeeping and maintenance play an important role in maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming learning environment for students, guests, and team members. At Aveda Institute of Chicago, we are committed to providing a professional, safe, and supportive atmosphere, and our Custodian helps ensure our facility operates smoothly and stays in good working order every day.
Key Responsibilities
Early Morning (6:00 AM - 8:00 AM) - Before guests/team members arrive:
  • Sweep and mop all classrooms, common areas, restrooms, break areas, and other facility spaces.
  • Perform daily sanitation of high-touch surfaces and restrooms.
  • Remove trash and recycling and reset spaces for the day ahead.

Daytime (8:00 AM - 11:00 AM) - While facility is occupied:
  • Spot-clean and maintain common areas, restrooms, and break areas throughout the morning.
  • Restock restroom supplies, cleaning products, and other facility essentials.
  • Wipe down surfaces and shared spaces as needed.
  • Manage laundry operations, including washing, drying, folding, and distributing linens, towels, capes, and other school materials.
  • Organize and maintain back-of-house storage areas, supply rooms, and laundry areas.

Maintenance & Repairs:
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks, such as fixing faucets, changing lightbulbs, tightening fixtures, and other basic handyman duties.
  • Identify and report larger maintenance or facility issues to leadership.
  • Support facility upkeep projects as assigned.

Ongoing:
  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate supply needs to leadership.
  • Follow all safety, sanitation, and infection-control procedures.
  • Perform other housekeeping and maintenance-related duties as assigned by leadership.

Schedule
  • Monday-Saturday, 6:00 AM-11:00 AM

Qualifications
  • Previous housekeeping, janitorial, custodial, or maintenance experience preferred.
  • Basic handyman skills (e.g., minor plumbing fixes, lightbulb replacement, general repairs) required.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and organization.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a consistent work routine.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to support the team.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, and moving throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely operate cleaning equipment and handle cleaning products according to established procedures.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools for minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organization.
