Staff Psychiatrist opening in Derby, ConnecticutLocated 11 miles from New Haven, CT; 40 miles from Hartford, and 75 miles from NYCJ1 and H1B visa sponsorship offered (H1B Cap Exempt organization)Details:

  • Full-time, permanent position
  • Onsite (no remote)
  • We are seeking a psychiatrist with experience and interest in both outpatient and intensive outpatient (IOP) settings. The ideal provider will be comfortable managing a diverse adult patient population, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, and providing high-quality, patient-centered care. Flexibility to tailor IOP track(s) based on clinical interests is available. Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills are essential.
  • Working in collaboration with the Chair of Psychiatric Services and the Director of Psychiatric Services, the Outpatient Psychiatrist will provide direct clinical services and clinical supervision in the Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic and the Intensive Outpatient Programs. The Outpatient Psychiatrist will organize and collaborate with all interdisciplinary behavioral services staff, to include RNs, APRNs, Licensed Social Workers, and Counselor and Front Office Support Staff.
  • Monday through Friday schedule (8am to 5pm) - The schedule can be tailored based on candidate preference and IOP track assignment
  • Paid weekend coverage (crisis, inpatient and consultation)
  • Teaching medical students and residents
  • Must be board certified or eligible
  • Supervision involved: Yes, the psychiatrist will provide clinical supervision and consultation to LCSWs and medical students as needed. This role also includes supervision of APRNs, reviewing treatment plans, and assisting with Medicare treatment certification.
  • Start date: ¬†ASAP
  • The position is primarily outpatient and IOP. There is possible phone-only crisis coverage during the day as needed to assist with vacation coverage. Occasional medical floor consults coverage may be required based on vacation coverage needs.
  • Admin time: ¬†Approximately 10‚Äì15% of the workweek will be dedicated to administrative duties, including documentation, treatment team meetings, supervision, coordination of care, and Medicare treatment certification.
  • Clinical time: ¬†Approximately 85% of the workweek will be spent in direct patient care, including new evaluations and follow-ups.
  • Daily job duties/what does their day-to-day look like (admissions, consults, etc.): ¬†
  • * Review LCSW intake assessments. All patients are seen by LCSW prior to initial psychiatric evaluation.¬†* Conduct initial psychiatric evaluations (1 hour) ¬†* Provide medication management and follow-up visits (30 minutes) ¬†* Collaborate with LCSWs, APRNs, and other team members ¬†* Provide clinical supervision to APRNs ¬†* Participate in IOP and outpatient treatment team meetings¬†* Complete documentation in Meditech EMR ¬†* Supervise and support clinical staff as appropriate ¬†* Coordinate care with primary care and specialty providers ¬†* Assist with Medicare treatment certification ¬†* Teach and supervise third-year medical students ¬†* Opportunities to teach and mentor medical residents ¬†* Respond to rare psychiatric emergencies within the outpatient and IOP buildings, including assessing patients for a Physician‚Äôs Emergency Certificate (PEC) for transport to the hospital ¬†
  • Support staff: Robust support staff including LCSWs, APRNs, and administrative support.
  • Call: coverage for weeknights and weekends (inpatient, crisis, and consults) is shared on a 1:4 rotation, including holidays as needed. Provider will be the only one on call. ¬†
  • What is the patient population (ages, illness, severity, etc.)? ¬†Adults (18+), with a range of psychiatric diagnoses including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD, psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and co-occurring conditions. Patients are generally stable enough for outpatient or IOP level of care.
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry is preferred; Board Eligibility will be considered.
  • Average patients per day: Typically 8‚Äì12 patients per day, depending on the mix of IOP and outpatient appointments.
  • Time allotted to see each patient (evaluations and follow-ups): ¬†
  • * Initial evaluation: 1 hour ¬†* Follow-up visits: 30 minutes
  • EMR system: Meditech
  • Dictation: Dragon dictation software is available.
  • An ideal candidate will have strong clinical skills in psychiatric assessment and medication management, a collaborative approach to working with multidisciplinary teams, flexibility to tailor IOP track(s) based on clinical interests, and a commitment to patient-centered care and quality improvement. Excellent communication and organizational skills, as well as an interest in supervision and teaching‚Äîincluding teaching third-year medical students , nurse practitioners and opportunities to teach medical residents‚Äîare highly valued.
