Berkeley Lab's (LBNL) Information Technology Division (IT) has an opening for a Graphics Designer II to join the Creative Services Group!  

In this exciting role, you will produce high-quality, engaging, and brand-compliant visual content. Reporting to the Creative Services Manager, this role will focus primarily on brand templating platforms while collaborating with stakeholders, the Creative Services team, and various internal divisions within the Lab to evaluate project needs, maintain high-quality visual standards, and ensure brand integrity. You will have the opportunity to create and maintain reusable visual assets and templates, executing design assignments across print and digital media, and manage projects from initial concept through completion. We are looking for a talented professional with strong creative design skills, experience with design systems, and a passion for accessible, legible, and aesthetic visual communication for a collaborative research environment.

This position has an anticipated start date of October 1, 2026.

What You Will Do:

  • Receive design assignments and deliver well-crafted visual assets, templates, and campaigns.
  • Design and create templates in Canva and Marq for a variety of communications materials (e.g., presentations, social media graphics, flyers, reports).
  • Design and produce publications, printed materials, presentations and websites for a broad range of clients. 
  • Ensure the correct use of LBNL's styles, color palette (CMYK, RGB, and/or Hex), logos, and fonts where applicable.
  • Partner with stakeholders to understand project objectives, target audience, and brand voice.
  • Conduct thorough design research and concept development to inform content development.
  • Develop a library of reusable visual assets (icons, illustrations, photography treatment) for use across platforms, ensuring consistency and ease of use.
  • Collaborate with the Creative Services Office team to ensure all content meets quality and accessibility standards, and adheres strictly to brand guidelines.
  • Participate in team meetings with updates on assigned projects.
  • Execute and deliver visual components for communications campaigns, ensuring the output is optimized for the intended digital and print channels.
  • Track, organize, and maintain design assets and templates, following Berkeley Lab's and CSO's established procedures and processes.
  • Coordinate design and layout selections of photos, paper stocks, and other materials for execution of projects.
  • Prepare 4-color and spot-color electronic files for the printer using the Adobe Creative Suite and other software programs as necessary, and screen-ready files for digital applications.
  • Work closely with the Printing Coordinator in preparing documents for printing.
  • Write clear and concise printing specifications and evaluate a variety of printers' proofs.
  • Create scientific and editorial illustrations for academic journals and other publications.

What We Are Looking For:

  • A Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of professional experience as a Graphic Designer or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with current software and/or other tools used by Graphic Artists, Illustrators, and Designers including Canva, Marq, Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat), Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Applications.
  • Comprehensive graphic design skills including branding, typography, technical illustration, color theory, digital file color management, and an understanding of industry standards of printing, including offset process and spot colors.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with industry-standard design software, brand templating platforms, and the creation and maintenance of branded templates.
  • Strong knowledge of design principles and best practices for web, print, and digital platforms.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple creative projects simultaneously from concept to completion, including appropriately estimating the time necessary to produce work, work within budgeted hours, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with a history of producing professional, high-quality, detail-oriented, error-free brand-compliant materials. 
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and presentation skills, including the ability to diplomatically collaborate with a broad range of personnel at all levels of an organization.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of digital tools and production technologies.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS, wireframes, and prototyping.
  • Experience with Wordpress and Figma.

  • Salary Information: This position is represented by a union and has a budgeted salary range of $36.22 - $52.72 hourly, for job code 797.2. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group (if applicable, and union contract agreement).

  • Work Modality: This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA 94720. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
