Job description

Canoe Instructor - Summer Camp
Cranbrook Schools Summer Camp is seeking an experienced Canoe Instructor. This position will supervise and manage all campers to ensure consistent engagement and safety for each camper during the activity. They will deliver canoeing instruction and activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers' age and abilities. They will interact with families and campers in a positive, nurturing and enriching manner. The Canoe Instructor will create lesson plans and supply requirements for the Camp Director and assist in the management of the boating facilities and equipment.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures in canoeing.
  • Assist in the implementation of staff training for boating.
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities by conducting daily checks of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Clean waterfront area daily keeping it free of hazards and debris.
  • Maintain American Camp Association accreditation standards and Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential licensing requirements applicable to canoeing activities.
  • Attention to campers' activities, engagement, safety and whereabouts at all times is paramount.
  • Teach assigned sports, skills, crafts, or techniques to campers utilizing the assistance of camp counselors.

Qualifications: High school diploma; experience in activity; teaching experience; certified in activity or be open to early training (if applicable); superior problem-solving skills and ability to relate with campers, staff, and parents.
Preferred: A current lifeguard training certification; currently attending or graduated from college; camp employment experience.
Timeframe: June 8th to August 9th; Weekdays only except first and last. Must be able to work the entire length of camp.
Wage: $18.00/hour
Benefits: Lunch provided; discounts for children/grandchildren.
