What does a camera mechanical engineer do?

A Camera Mechanical Engineer designs, develops, and tests the mechanical components and assemblies of cameras, such as lenses, housings, and moving parts. They work closely with electrical and optical engineers to ensure all mechanical parts fit together and function smoothly. Their work includes selecting materials, creating prototypes, and solving mechanical challenges to make cameras reliable, compact, and durable. They often use CAD software for design and may be involved in the manufacturing process as well.

What are some common challenges camera mechanical engineers face when collaborating with cross-functional teams during product development?

Camera Mechanical Engineers often work closely with optical, electrical, and industrial design teams to ensure that camera components meet both performance and manufacturability requirements. One common challenge is balancing the mechanical constraints with the needs of image quality, thermal management, and miniaturization, especially in compact devices. Effective communication and iterative prototyping are essential to align different technical priorities and quickly resolve issues that arise during integration. Staying adaptable and open to feedback helps ensure successful collaboration and product outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a camera mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Camera Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, optics, and materials science, typically with a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and familiarity with industry standards are essential, along with experience using tools like SolidWorks or AutoCAD. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage complex design challenges. These skills ensure that camera systems are engineered for precision, reliability, and manufacturability in demanding applications.

Job description

Description

Optikos is seeking an early-career, talented, and creative mechanical engineer to join our growing business of optical system development. You will join a diverse engineering staff and develop new and cutting-edge products for our customers and for the Optikos product line. Our small company atmosphere (90+ employees) is ideal for those engineers who enjoy the full gamut of product development, from conceptualization, modeling and simulation, to prototyping and laboratory testing. You will build the products you design and see them manufactured for use in consumer, industrial, medical, and aerospace applications. Optikos specializes in taking on interesting and challenging projects, and we are eager to add talent to our exceptional team!

A successful candidate has a solid foundation of mechanical knowledge, a passion for mechanical design, and an eagerness to learn anything and everything about mechanical engineering. You must be creative and inquisitive, a quick learner, receptive to feedback, and willing to learn on the job.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and systems using CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Perform engineering calculations and analyses (stress, thermal, tolerance) to validate designs.
  • Create detailed drawings and specifications for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Collaborate with electrical and optical engineers to integrate mechanical designs into complete systems.
  • Support prototype builds, testing, and troubleshooting to ensure product performance.
  • Evaluate materials and manufacturing processes for cost-effectiveness and reliability.
  • Maintain documentation and ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Provide technical support to production and quality teams during product launch and lifecycle.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (or greater) in engineering, sciences, or related field (Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience preferred).
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, preferably including customer interactions and experience with optical system design and manufacture.
  • Experience using SolidWorks to design and make detailed part and assembly drawings (SolidWorks certification is a plus).
  • Experience using PLM workflows (SolidWorks desired) to control design and drawing revisions.
  • Knowledge and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to ensure form, fit, and function of parts and assemblies.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to quickly grasp and utilize technical concepts.
  • Ability to manage priorities and optimally work in a fast-paced, challenging environment with deadlines.
  • Highly motivated individual capable of independent direction, problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Attention to detail, capable of following written instructions.
  • Demonstrable experience in the use of SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Enjoys hands-on work in the lab. It is routine to build and test your own designs.
  • Project-manage deliverables across project teams and ensure strong communication.
  • Ability to communicate between an interdisciplinary team of engineers.
