THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Educational Psychology (EPSY) is in the School of Education, within the College of Arts Letters and Social Sciences (CLASS). EPSY offers a number of programs leading to the M.S. in Counseling Psychology, the M.S. in Special Education, and related credentials. Our programs prepare specialists and educators who desire to work as Marriage and Family Therapists, School Counselors, School Psychologists, or Educational Specialists. Our graduates provide innovative and transformative services in schools, clinical, and community settings and are well-respected for their responsive service and dedication in many Bay Area communities.
DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The Department of Educational Psychology is seeking a tenure-track full-time faculty member with specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy to teach classes in and support operations of our Marriage and Family Therapy Program. This remarkable position requires the following: teaching professional and academic courses; supervising and mentoring Marriage and Family Therapists- in-training; supporting program operations; supporting ongoing data collection, program evaluation, and program improvement and recruitment in keeping with California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) standards/rules and regulations; conducting and submitting research to journals; and engaging in community service. This full-time faculty position may include serving as Coordinator of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program.
Responsibilities include:
- Teaching courses including (but not restricted to): Fieldwork Supervision, Theories of Counseling, Group Counseling, Family Therapy, Psychological Research and other courses of interest.
- Researching and publishing related to the practice of marriage and family therapy and supervision.
- Supporting program students as it relates to coursework, program expectations field progress.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with the training agencies where students are placed.
- Recruiting and admitting Marriage and Family Therapy students- including participating in orientations, reviewing applications, and conducting interviews of potential students.
- Remaining current with the latest regulations and implementation of MFT requirements from the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS).
- Participating actively in professional organizations, such as the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), the American Family Therapy Association (AFTA), or the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT).
- Serving on university, community, state, and national committees.
- Possible coordinating of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program.
Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward campus, Concord Center, and/or online. The policy and expectation of the California State University is that tenure-track faculty members will perform their duties within the state of California. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization. Anticipated salary: $7,015 to $7,269 monthly; ($84,180 to $87,228 annually)
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester 2026
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- An earned doctorate from a nationally recognized and accredited institution in Psychology or Counseling or the equivalent; Applicants who are ABD will be considered, but a successful ABD candidate must complete all requirements for the doctorate by the effective date of the appointment in August 2026.
- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy (LMFT) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or the equivalent;
- Eligibility to supervise MFT Trainees in California;
- Experience counseling mental health clients including individuals, families, children and couples;
- Commitment to the active pursuit of a research agenda leading to refereed scholarship and/or professional presentations;
- Strong interest in and professional commitment to the preparation of future professional Marriage and Family and Therapists;
- Effective interpersonal skills, collegiality, and collaboration.
Preferred:
- Experience with MFT licensure process/support to trainees;
- Clinical counseling experience in a mental health setting;
- Skill and ability to understand and apply knowledge of the history and culture necessary in order to serve the breadth of local communities;
- Experience with instruction in family, couples and child therapy and instructional technology;
- Competence in Substance Abuse Counseling and/or Community Mental Health.
- Experience in teaching and community service.
