Cad Designer Cnc Programmer information

What does a CAD Designer CNC Programmer do?

A CAD Designer CNC Programmer is responsible for creating detailed technical drawings and designs using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, and then programming Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to manufacture parts based on those designs. They translate engineering concepts into precise instructions that guide automated machinery, ensuring products are manufactured accurately and efficiently. Their work often involves collaborating with engineers, selecting appropriate materials, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing production processes for quality and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CAD Designer CNC Programmer?

To excel as a CAD Designer CNC Programmer, you need strong technical drawing skills, proficiency in CAD software, and a solid understanding of machining processes, typically supported by an associate degree or technical certification in engineering or manufacturing. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and CNC programming languages such as G-code is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate part designs, efficient machine programming, and smooth collaboration with production teams, leading to high-quality manufacturing outcomes.

How do CAD Designer CNC Programmers typically collaborate with machinists and engineers during a project?

CAD Designer CNC Programmers work closely with both machinists and engineers to ensure that designs are manufacturable and meet performance requirements. They often translate engineers' concepts into detailed CAD models and CNC programs, then coordinate with machinists to clarify specifications, troubleshoot issues, and optimize the machining process. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as frequent adjustments or feedback may be needed to achieve quality and efficiency throughout the production cycle.

What is the difference between Cad Designer Cnc Programmer vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCad Designer Cnc ProgrammerCnc Machinist
Primary RoleDesigns parts and programs CNC machines based on CAD modelsOperates CNC machines to produce parts from raw materials
Skills & CertificationsCAD software proficiency, CNC programming knowledge, technical drawing skillsMachine operation skills, blueprint reading, basic CNC knowledge
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, manufacturing plants, programming stationsWorkshop floors, manufacturing facilities, machine shops
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and engineering firmsCommonly employed in machine shops, production facilities, and manufacturing plants

While both roles are integral to CNC manufacturing, Cad Designer Cnc Programmers focus on designing and programming parts using CAD and CAM software, whereas Cnc Machinists operate and set up CNC machines to produce parts directly. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

How much do cad designer cnc programmers earn?

Cad Designer CNC Programmers typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers with certifications and proficiency in CAD and CAM software may earn higher salaries, especially in specialized manufacturing environments.

Is there a demand for Cad Designer CNC Programmers?

Cad Designer CNC Programmers are in steady demand due to the need for precise manufacturing and automation in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and machinery. Skills in CAD software and CNC programming are highly valued, and employment opportunities are expected to grow as manufacturing continues to adopt advanced technology.

Job description

Millwork Engineer / CAD Designer

Employment Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-4:00 PM
Work Location: On-Site
Compensation: Competitive, based on experience

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Millwork Engineer / CAD Designer to join our team and support the production of architectural woodworking and millwork projects from design through manufacturing and installation.

This position is responsible for taking architectural drawings and developing detailed shop drawings for review and approval by architects, general contractors, construction managers, and customers. Approved drawings are then used by our CNC operators, bench carpenters, and installation crews to bring the project to completion.

The ideal candidate will have a strong command of AutoCAD combined with hands-on knowledge of woodworking, cabinetry, carpentry, and architectural millwork. Experience with CNC programming software is highly beneficial, but we are willing to train the right candidate who has the necessary AutoCAD and woodworking foundation.

We are looking for someone who can work efficiently, demonstrate a sense of urgency, communicate effectively, and take ownership of their work with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Draft and review detailed AutoCAD shop drawings for architectural woodworking and millwork projects.
  • Interpret architectural drawings, plans, and specifications and translate them into accurate, production-ready shop drawings.
  • Coordinate drawings and details to ensure designs are practical for manufacturing, fabrication, and installation.
  • Prepare CNC machine programs using CAD/CAM software such as WoodWOP, WoodCAD|CAM, and CutRite.
  • Coordinate with CNC operators, bench carpenters, installers, project managers, and other team members throughout the production process.
  • Revise drawings based on architect, customer, GC/CM, and internal feedback.
  • Ensure drawings and CNC programs accurately reflect project requirements and approved designs.
  • Identify potential fabrication or installation issues before they reach production.
  • Manage assigned projects and tasks efficiently while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Work independently and complete assignments without requiring constant direct supervision.
  • Maintain a strong sense of urgency while meeting project deadlines and production schedules.
Qualifications Required
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of woodworking, cabinetry, carpentry, or architectural millwork.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and construction documents.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate technical drawings.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Strong work ethic and a sense of urgency.
Preferred
  • Experience with WoodCAD|CAM.
  • Experience with Microvellum / iX.
  • Experience with WoodWOP or CutRite.
  • Previous experience programming CNC machinery for woodworking or millwork applications.
  • Experience producing shop drawings for architectural millwork or custom woodworking projects.
Education & Experience

A two-year degree is not required for this position.

We are primarily interested in what you can do, not simply what is listed on your résumé. Candidates who can demonstrate strong AutoCAD skills, understand woodworking and millwork, and effectively communicate within a manufacturing and construction environment will be considered.

We are willing to train the right candidate on CNC programming and our specific CAD/CAM software if they already possess a strong foundation in AutoCAD and woodworking.

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will be someone who:

  • Takes ownership of their work.
  • Can perform assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Works efficiently and with a sense of urgency.
  • Has a strong attention to detail.
  • Is comfortable working in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Communicates well with teammates and other project stakeholders.
  • Has a positive, team-oriented attitude.
  • Is willing to learn new software and processes.
  • Understands that accuracy in the engineering and drafting process directly impacts fabrication, CNC production, and field installation.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive compensation based on experience.
  • Full health benefits.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO).
  • 401(k).
  • Full-time, Monday-Friday schedule.
  • Opportunity to develop additional expertise in CNC programming, CAD/CAM, and architectural millwork engineering.
