The main difference between a C Linux Developer and a C Embedded Developer lies in their work environment and focus. C Linux Developers primarily work on software applications running on Linux systems, while C Embedded Developers focus on programming microcontrollers and embedded hardware. Both roles require knowledge of C programming, but their applications and industries differ significantly.

What are some common challenges faced by C Linux Developers when working on large-scale systems?

C Linux Developers often encounter challenges such as managing system resources efficiently, debugging complex multi-threaded applications, and ensuring compatibility across different Linux distributions. Working on large-scale systems requires careful attention to performance bottlenecks and memory leaks, as well as thorough testing to maintain stability. Collaboration with other developers and system administrators is crucial, as many projects involve cross-functional teams and integration with various hardware or software components.

What is a C Linux Developer?

A C Linux Developer is a software engineer who specializes in writing applications and system-level programs in the C programming language for the Linux operating system. Their work often involves developing or maintaining software that interacts closely with the Linux kernel, writing drivers, or building performance-critical applications. They need a strong understanding of operating system concepts, low-level programming, and familiarity with Linux development tools and environments. These developers play a key role in open-source projects, embedded systems, and server-side applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a C Linux Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a C Linux Developer, you need strong proficiency in C programming, a deep understanding of Linux operating systems, and experience with system-level development, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with GNU toolchain, version control systems like Git, and debugging tools such as GDB is commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These competencies are essential for building robust, efficient software that integrates seamlessly with Linux systems and for working effectively within development teams.

Job: Lead Software Developer

Team: Voltage SecureData Engineering

Location: Richmond Hill/ Mississauga/ Ottawa/ Waterloo, ON, Canada (office-based)

About Voltage SecureData

Voltage SecureData is OpenText's data-centric encryption platform, protecting sensitive information across cloud, on-premises, and mainframe environments. The team develops the core cryptographic libraries, SDKs, and platform integrations that power the product.

Your Impact:

Join the team that builds the cryptographic engine behind Voltage SecureData: cross-platform C/C++ libraries and multi-language SDKs used by banks, retailers, and healthcare organizations worldwide.

The platform supports Linux, Windows, macOS, AIX, Solaris, IBM z/OS, and HPE NonStop, with SDKs for Java and C#/.NET. Most engineering work centers on the portable C/C++ core, cryptographic services, and cross-language SDK integration.

This is a hands-on engineering leadership role. You will write and debug production code, lead technical design discussions, mentor engineers, and help resolve complex customer and platform issues.

What the role offers:

Technical leadership

Lead feature development from design through implementation and release

Set standards for code quality, testing, and reviews

Drive cross-platform build and CI/CD strategy using CMake, GitLab CI, and Jenkins

Maintain API and ABI stability across platforms and releases

Mentor engineers and support architectural decision-making

Partner with QA on unit, integration, and platform qualification testing

Act as an escalation point for cryptographic, HSM, PKCS#11, and platform-related defects

Hands-on engineering

Develop and review cryptographic functionality, including:

- symmetric and asymmetric encryption

- key management and wrapping

- TLS configuration and certificate handling

- message authentication and format-preserving encryption

Own Java and C# SDK layers, including native interoperability with the core C library

Improve platform security posture, including FIPS 140 and post-quantum readiness

Platform-specific work (desirable)

Support IBM z/OS integrations involving xLC/C++, JCL, SMP/E, RACF/ACF2, and COBOL/native interfaces

Maintain HPE NonStop platform support and customer fixes as required

What you need to succeed:

Essential

Expert-level C/C++, C#, and Java development

Strong systems programming background across Linux, Windows, or UNIX-like platforms

Experience building portable, maintainable cross-platform software

Practical applied cryptography experience:

- TLS/SSL

- public-key cryptography

- symmetric encryption

- message authentication

- key management

Experience with native interop and cross-language SDK design

Strong build engineering skills with CMake and CI/CD pipelines

Technical leadership experience in code reviews, architecture, and mentoring

Strongly preferred

PKCS#11 and HSM integration experience (nCipher, Atalla, Thales Luna)

JVM and managed-runtime debugging experience

Knowledge of post-quantum cryptography

Payments/security standards such as EMV, PCI-DSS, or ISO 8583

Experience using AI-assisted development tools effectively in production environments

Nice to have

IBM z/OS development experience

HPE NonStop experience

Familiarity with non-POSIX and enterprise systems environments

What we offer

Ownership of security-critical systems used by major enterprises

Rare exposure to platforms such as IBM z/OS and HPE NonStop

Direct involvement in cryptographic and platform-level engineering challenges

A senior, engineering-driven team focused on technical quality and real-world problem solving
