Job description

We are pleased to announce an exceptional opportunity for a skilled Hematology/Oncology Physician to join the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. As an integral member of our healthcare team, you will play a key role in delivering outstanding cancer and blood disorder care to our nation’s Veterans in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Why live in Long Beach

Located in beautiful Southern California, Long Beach offers oceanfront living, a vibrant arts scene, cultural diversity, and easy access to Los Angeles and Orange County. Enjoy sunshine year-round, excellent schools, and a community that values wellness, innovation, and an active outdoor lifestyle.

Practice environment

This is an outpatient/inpatient blended hematology/oncology position providing the full spectrum of cancer and benign hematology care. The role includes outpatient clinic, supervision of fellows and other trainees, oversight of an infusion center, and participation in the inpatient consult service at the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center in Long Beach.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive evaluation and management of patients with solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, and benign hematologic conditions in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Perform consultations, develop treatment plans, and provide follow-up care for inpatients and outpatients, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy management delivered through the infusion center.
  • Participate in and help lead inpatient hematology/oncology consult services, including coordinating admissions and co-managing complex patients with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Supervise and teach hematology/oncology fellows (majority of learners) and residents from affiliated training programs, providing clinical mentorship and bedside teaching.
  • Engage in tumor boards and multidisciplinary conferences to support high-quality, coordinated, patient-centered cancer care for Veterans.
  • Participate in quality improvement and academic/teaching activities, with opportunities for clinical research depending on interests and service needs.

Compensation

Competitive starting annual salary: $360,000–$400,000, depending on credentials and experience.

  • Employees are eligible to receive up to $15,000 in performance-based pay annually (salary plus performance pay not to exceed a combined total of $400,000 per year).
  • Employees may also qualify for Proficiency Awards, which are available in addition to Pay for Performance incentives.
  • Regular salary reviews occur every two years, with annual cost-of-living adjustments.

Schedule and call

  • Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (full-time on-site at VA Long Beach).
  • Call coverage: Call is covered by rotation; during weeks that the physician is on the inpatient service, they are also on call, with the fellow serving as first on-call and the attending available to come into the hospital as needed.

Academic affiliation

This position is affiliated with the University of California, Irvine (UCI), with a strong focus on fellow education (majority of learners are fellows) and participation from residents of other programs. Fellows rotate at both UCI Medical Center and the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center as part of their hematology/oncology training.

Opportunities exist to teach, mentor, and supervise trainees in both inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, and to pursue an academic appointment through UCI, subject to qualifications and institutional approval.
