What does a buyer do?

A Buyer is responsible for purchasing goods and services for a company or organization, ensuring that the right products are sourced at the best possible prices. They research suppliers, negotiate contracts, evaluate quality and price, and manage relationships with vendors. Buyers also analyze market trends to anticipate consumer demand and help maintain optimal inventory levels. Their work is essential to ensuring that businesses operate efficiently and meet their customers' needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a buyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Buyer, you need strong analytical skills, negotiation abilities, and a background in supply chain management or business, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with procurement software, ERP systems, and certifications like Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) are typically used in the role. Excellent communication, relationship-building, and attention to detail are standout soft skills for managing vendors and contracts. These skills ensure cost-effective purchasing, timely inventory management, and successful supplier partnerships critical for business operations.

What are some common challenges buyers face when managing supplier relationships?

Buyers often encounter challenges such as negotiating favorable terms, ensuring consistent product quality, and managing lead times with suppliers. Building strong relationships while maintaining cost-effectiveness requires clear communication and the ability to resolve conflicts diplomatically. Job description

Purchasing Power is a leading employee purchase program that helps people buy the products and services they need through the convenience of payroll deduction. As part of PROG Holdings (NYSE: PRG), a FinTech holding company with more than 20 years of experience, we're focused on building simple, responsible financial solutions that put people first. PROG Holdings' portfolio includes Progressive Leasing, a market leader in leasetoown solutions, Purchasing Power, and Four, a Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) platform - all united by a commitment to innovation, access, and meaningful impact.

We are currently hiring an Assistant Buyer - Fashion Categories & Marketplace Support to join our growing merchandising team! This role is a critical execution and analytical support position that enables our Buyers and Senior Buyers to focus on strategic assortment decisions, margin optimization, and revenue growth. As part of our future-state merchandising operating model, you will own day-to-day operations across fashion product lines and third-party marketplace channels while developing the skills needed to grow into a Buyer role.

WE ARE: A fast-moving FinTech company with a passion for innovation and a merchandising team that moves at the speed of fashion. We build cross-functional partnerships, leverage data to drive decisions, and foster a culture where operational excellence meets creative merchandising strategy. We are committed to growing talent from within and developing the next generation of buyers.

This is a hybrid role that requires inoffice presence in Atlanta, Georgia.

YOU ARE: A detail-oriented, analytically curious merchandising professional with a passion for fashion and a drive to learn. You thrive in fast-paced environments, take ownership of execution with strong follow-through, and are energized by the intersection of data, product, and vendor relationships. You are eager to grow into a strategic Buyer role and bring discipline and accountability to make that happen.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY:

  • Manage, maintain, and update fashion SKUs across merchandising systems, ensuring accuracy of cost, attributes (size, color, fit, fabrication), sourcing, and lifecycle status

  • Support trend-driven assortment changes tied to seasonal transitions, SKU rationalization, and Good/Better/Best strategies across apparel, footwear, and accessories categories

  • Monitor SKU readiness to ensure fashion categories are execution-ready for pricing, promotions, and site merchandising launches aligned to seasonal calendars

  • Partner with Buyers to track in-season sell-through and flag early markdown or reorder candidates based on performance data

  • Support operational management of fashion product listings across third-party marketplace channels (e.g., Amazon, Walmart Marketplace), ensuring listing accuracy, content completeness, and policy compliance

  • Coordinate item setup, attribute enrichment, and content updates for marketplace-listed fashion SKUs in alignment with platform requirements and brand standards

  • Monitor marketplace performance metrics (sell-through, return rates, listing health scores) and surface anomalies or opportunities to the Buyer

  • Assist with marketplace promotional setups, pricing parity checks, and vendor funding alignment specific to channel commitments

  • Execute approved pricing updates and markdown cadences for fashion categories in alignment with seasonal pricing strategies and established guardrails

  • Perform competitive price checks and basic price validation across fashion and marketplace channels to support pricing integrity

  • Support promotional execution by ensuring accurate setup, vendor funding alignment, and post-event data readiness for fashion-specific events

  • Act as the day-to-day operational liaison with fashion vendors for item setup, content needs, size/fit specifications, and executional follow-ups

  • Coordinate with Fulfillment, Accounting/AP, Customer Care, Marketing, and Site Merchandising to resolve issues impacting customer experience or financial accuracy

  • Prepare and maintain standard reports related to SKU performance, pricing changes, promotions, assortment health, and marketplace channel metrics

  • Build proficiency in fashion merchandising KPIs such as sell-through rate, revenue per SKU, margin contribution, weeks of supply, and return rate by category

  • Track and summarize fashion trend data and competitive insights to support Buyer strategy conversations

YOU'LL BRING:

  • Bachelor's degree in Merchandising, Fashion Business, Marketing, Supply Chain, Finance, or related field, or equivalent relevant work experience

  • 1-3 years of experience in merchandising, buying, planning, or a related analytical role; fashion or apparel industry experience a plus

  • Strong Excel skills and comfort working with data

  • Experience working in fast-paced, cross-functional environments

  • High attention to detail with strong follow-through and accountability

  • Experience with PIM/ERP systems (Oracle preferred)

  • Exposure to marketplace platforms (Amazon Seller Central, Walmart Marketplace, or similar) and their operational workflows

  • Familiarity with fashion product attributes, sizing standards, and seasonal merchandise calendars

  • Exposure to pricing, promotions, or SKU lifecycle management in a fashion or apparel context

  • Retail or eCommerce merchandising experience, preferably in apparel, footwear, or accessories

  • Demonstrated interest in progressing into a Buyer role within a fashion merchandising environment

  • AI-enabled tools are already part of how work gets done across our organization, and their use will continue to expand over time. We value people who are curious, adaptable, and open to learning as roles and workflows evolve

WE OFFER:

  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and company-paid life insurance

  • 401(k) retirement plan

  • Career development opportunities

  • Employee Purchase Program
