What is a business intelligence data engineer?

A Business Intelligence (BI) Data Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure and processes that allow organizations to collect, store, and analyze data for business decision-making. They work closely with data analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to ensure data is accessible, reliable, and optimized for reporting and analytics. Typical tasks include developing data pipelines, integrating data from various sources, and ensuring data quality and security. Their work enables organizations to transform raw data into actionable insights that help drive business growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a business intelligence data engineer?

To thrive as a Business Intelligence Data Engineer, you need strong skills in data modeling, ETL development, SQL, and a background in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with BI tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI), data warehousing platforms (like Snowflake or Redshift), and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate are highly valuable. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are important soft skills for translating business requirements into actionable insights. These competencies ensure reliable data infrastructure, accurate reporting, and successful collaboration with stakeholders to drive informed business decisions.

How do business intelligence data engineers typically collaborate with analysts and business stakeholders?

Business Intelligence Data Engineers frequently work alongside data analysts and business stakeholders to ensure data pipelines and reporting tools meet organizational needs. They translate business requirements into technical specifications, build or optimize data models, and provide clean, reliable datasets for analysis. Regular communication and feedback loops are essential, as data engineers must adapt solutions to evolving business questions and ensure data integrity throughout the process. This collaborative approach helps deliver actionable insights and supports data-driven decision-making across teams.

What is the difference between Business Intelligence Data Engineer vs Data Analyst?

Job description

Description

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Business Intelligence Engineer to join the BI Engineering team supporting Robotic programs. In this role, you will serve as the BI owner for portfolio of robotic solutions โ€” designing, developing, and maintaining dashboards, reports, and other analytics artifacts that enable data-driven decisions across the program lifecycle. You will also establish the standards and operating procedures that ensure our BI solutions remain scalable, reliable, and maintainable as RST's technology portfolio grows. Beyond dashboards, you bring a strong foundation in statistics โ€” including hypothesis testing, design of experiments, and exploratory data analysis โ€” to support engineering and program teams in evaluating robotic system performance. You are a collaborative problem-solver who thinks holistically about how systems work together and uses data to identify improvements to architecture, design, and operational readiness.

Key job responsibilities

โ€ข BI Ownership for RST: Design, build, and maintain dashboards and reporting solutions that serve all robotic solutions through their Alpha, Beta, and General Availability phases.

โ€ข Governance & Maintainability: Develop and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for dashboard lifecycle management โ€” including version control practices, data validation standards, refresh monitoring, stakeholder access management, and deprecation workflows โ€” to ensure long-term health and scalability of the team's BI portfolio.

โ€ข Data Source Development: Identify and onboard new data sources, define metrics, and build data pipelines that feed BI solutions and enable cross-program comparisons.

โ€ข Stakeholder Partnership: Collaborate with Data Scientists, Data Engineers, Program Managers, and engineering teams to translate ambiguous business questions into structured analyses and automated reporting.

โ€ข Statistical Analysis: Execute foundational statistical methods including hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, design of experiments (DOE), and regression analysis to support engineering evaluations and program decisions.

A day in the life

You will own major components of the team's analytics infrastructure, including contributing to data architecture decisions and delivering reports that drive the development and deployment of new robotic storage systems. On any given day, you might be building a new operational dashboard for a robotic solution entering Beta, writing an SOP that defines how the team documents data lineage and refresh schedules, or running a designed experiment to evaluate a system configuration change. You will maintain a deep understanding of data lineage across your BI solutions โ€” from the technical systems generating the data, through metric aggregation processes, to how insights are consumed and acted upon by stakeholders. You will create and optimize scripts (Python, R, Shell) to streamline BI processes and select appropriate analytics and visualization tools to meet diverse business needs. Your work will directly influence technology development decisions across RST's portfolio and shape the future of robotic storage technology landscape.

Basic Qualifications

- 3+ years of BI Engineering Experience

-3+ years of python scripting

- Experience with data modeling, warehousing and building ETL pipelines

- Experience with data visualization using Tableau, Quicksight, or similar tools

- Experience writing complex SQL queries

- Experience in Statistical Analysis packages such as R, SAS and Matlab

- Experience using SQL to pull data from a database or data warehouse and scripting experience (Python) to process data for modeling

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with AWS solutions such as EC2, DynamoDB, S3, and Redshift

- Experience in data mining, ETL, etc. and using databases in a business environment with large-scale, complex datasets
