Job description

Summary of the position: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the school corporation’s total educational programs.

Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Must be 21 years of age. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B, with airbrake, passenger and school bus(s) endorsements. Must be physically capable of safely operating a motor vehicle and/or mechanized machinery in accordance with the job description. Completion of a performance test in school bus operation. Satisfactory criminal background check, physical and drug screening.

Supervises: None

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·      Maintain order and discipline.

·      Transport students on his or her route to and from school safely and promptly.

·      Keep the bus in good mechanical condition.

·      Observe high standards of sanitation in the maintenance of the school bus.

·      Notify the Director of Transportation promptly of any required repairs to the bus and be responsible to secure spare bus as directed.

·      Exhibit respect and active concern for all students in his or her charge.

·      Prepare annual bus driver’s reports, bus roster lists, and other reports as directed.

·      Be good example for students in speech and appearance.

·      Plan to be available at once when the circumstance require the immediate or unscheduled return of students to their homes.

·      Notify the Director of Transportation when the assigned route cannot be ran.

·      Notify the Director of Transportation when a substitute is needed.

·      Make arrangements, when possible, in emergency situations for the transporting of students to the proper school or to their homes.

·      Assume any responsibilities as may be assigned.

·      Promote good public relations for the School Corporation and community. 

Special Considerations: Driving in all weather conditions, seated in a school bus of various makes or models. May be exposed to inclement weather conditions and hazardous traffic and/or driving conditions. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud. High level of contact with students and interaction with District personnel.
