Job description

Overview

POSITION PURPOSE: 

Assists the Transportation Operations Manager with planning, directing, and controlling activities associated with safely, efficiently, and promptly transporting students.   

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of the proper care and operation of a school bus and safe driving skills;
  • Knowledge of specific rules and regulations governing the operation of a school bus;
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically, Word; Google Apps;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to read, interpret, and convey to others documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals;
  • Ability to understand and comply with the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) Code of Ethics;
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, external agencies, and the community.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Successful leadership experience.

 

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license and has held a driver's license for a minimum of 2 years;
  • Hold and maintain a NC Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and P&S Endorsement (Passengers and School Bus) CDL training will be provided through WCPSS, if needed;
  • Commercial driver license (CDL) holders must meet the medical qualifications set by the NC General Statute Medical Qualifications Standards Applicable to Commercial Drivers.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years of age;
  • Must pass Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing at hire, randomly, and upon request.
    • Within past 12 months
      • No conviction of any moving violation;
      • No pending charge of any moving violation;
      • No more than one charge of any moving violation, regardless of disposition.
    • Within past 60 months
      • No more than three charges of moving violations of any kind;
      • No conviction of a moving violation combined with any other charge of a moving violation;
      • No charge of DWI or DUI;
      • No charge for reckless driving;
      • No charge for passing a stopped school bus.
    • Within past 10 years
      • No suspension or revocation of the driving privilege, other than for such status offenses as lapsed, insurance, failure to appear in court, and failure to comply with out-of-state citation, provided that there be no more than one suspension or revocation for such status offenses within the past 10-years.
    • Indefinite
      • No more than one charge of DWI or DUI.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates degree;
  • Knowledge of the Transportation Information Management System (TIMS); Cherwell (a service management software); operational understanding of bus Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and software;
  • First Aid and CPR certification;
  • Blood borne pathogens certification;
  • Experience driving a commercial vehicle;
  • No more than one charge of any moving violation, regardless of disposition.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • Schedules substitute bus drivers and combines routes without disrupting school arrival/departure times.
  • Assists in coordinating morning and afternoon transportation of students based on available drivers.
  • Assists drivers in learning routes.
  • Performs bus inspections for cleanliness and safety; assists in maintaining pre-trip inspection logs and student count sheets daily. 
  • Assists in assigning field trip and mid-day routes as well as maintaining appropriate field trip and mid-day route documents.
  • Utilizes Cherwell, TIMS, and GPS software to track delayed school buses; notifies school administration and the public of delayed buses.
  • Trains bus drivers on techniques to manage inappropriate student behavior and parental concerns.
  • Operates a school bus according to the assigned route, when needed; discharges students only at the authorized school or bus stop locations.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

    PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT  

    Must be able to use a variety of office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers.  Must be able to communicate effectively.  At times requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Physical requirements are consistent with those for medium work.  Department can contact the school's Physical Therapist for assistance, if needed, with proper lifting techniques.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Must be able to work in an office environment and school bus or school transportation vehicle and come into direct contact with school system staff, students, and parents. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to loud noise levels; fumes or airborne particles; vibrations from driving a bus; and various road and traffic conditions. The temperature on the bus could be cold or hot, depending on the weather.
