School Year: 2026-2027
Monday-Friday, hours are based on the assigned route (minimum of 25 hours per week to qualify for certain benefits)
Position Summary
The Arc Carroll County is seeking compassionate and dependable School Bus Assistants to support students with disabilities during transportation to and from school. In this role, you will assist the bus driver on an assigned route and help ensure students' safety, comfort, and positive behavior while in transit.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist students with boarding and exiting the school bus safely.
  • Secure safety equipment including seat belts, car seats, and wheelchair tie-down systems as required.
  • Lift and assist students into seating or car seats following safety procedures.
  • Monitor student attendance and maintain familiarity with assigned students and routes.
  • Provide supervision, intervention, and support to students during transport.
  • Support students in developing appropriate social skills and positive peer interactions.
  • Safely evacuate students from the bus during emergency situations when required.
  • Attend all required meetings, pre-service training, and in-service training sessions provided by Carroll County Public Schools and The Arc.
  • Maintain professional, respectful relationships with bus drivers, students, families, school staff, and The Arc personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Must meet all requirements for school bus assistants as required by the Carroll County Board of Education and the State of Maryland.
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions in emergency situations.
  • Ability to memorize route in order to assist a fill-in driver.
  • Complete pre-service instruction requirements (Special Needs training, etc.).
  • Clean drug screen and criminal record as The Arc provides programs, services, and direct care to vulnerable individuals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to lift/manipulate at least 50 pounds frequently with ability to lift, carry and/or exert force (push/pull) in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Ability to withstand prolonged periods of sitting and frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pulling and pushing required: Including lifting a wheelchair and repositioning an individual.
  • Ability to transfer individual from a wheelchair to bus. Ability to physically secure individual in a wheelchair to the bus with tie-downs.
  • Ability to participate in evacuation drills, including jumping out of the back of a bus then assisting children to exit.
