Job description

Description Perform responsible skilled mechanical work in the installation, repair and maintenance of water meters. Support the City's water sampling efforts and maintain acceptable chlorine levels in the water system. Essential Functions Assist with the location of water and sewer lines to prevent damage.

Assist with the location of valves for cut off during construction; Exercise and check water valves; Install, repair, and remove water meters; Make water taps, install laterals and meter boxes; Take water samples; Check pumping stations and water tanks; Conduct fire hydrant, pressure and flow tests; Operate test equipment to verify accuracy of registration; Clean and maintain shop, vehicles, equipment and tools; and Perform related task as required. Qualifications Must possess a High School Diploma or GED. At least three (3) years of work experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water meters.

Knowledge of Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) rules and regulations pertaining to water sampling. Knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in the repair and testing of water meters. Knowledge of the principles of water meter operations.

Aptitude and skill in the use of mechanical equipment and tools. Ability to disassemble, repair and adjust water meters. Ability to make water taps.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions. An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the position. Additional Requirements Possession of a valid Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Physical Requirements - Ability to stand, stoop, and walk in areas of limited or difficult access. Ability to wear protective clothing and devices. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to inclement weather conditions and emergencies.
