Job description

Basic Purpose of the Job: Under general supervision, conducts plan review, and participates in other functions within the division to issue building permits, collect payments and assists with walk-in customers by providing technical support to explain applicable codes, rules regulations. May also perform on-site building, mechanical, plumbing inspections and code enforcement activities to ensure code compliance. Essential Functions: (Essential functions,as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics.

The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.) Accepts building permit applications and reviews application materials for submittal completeness relating to construction and development administered by the Building Services Department. Reviews building plans, architectural drawings, structural calculations and specifications submitted for conformance with adopted codes and regulations and works with other internal departments and external agencies to approve plans. Assist and provide support to Building Inspector on an as-needed basis and conduct field inspections related to Building Code enforcement activities and prepares associated correspondence and records

Communicates with citizens and other City divisions to resolve violations. Keeps records and prepares correspondence pertaining to plan reviews. Calculates, collects fees and issues building permits.

Provides information to the public regarding City building codes and ordinances including regulations on accessibility, energy conservation, life safety, occupancy classifications and uses, and other construction related topics. Assists customers to prepare complete application materials, answer questions about potential building projects, and respond to customer inquiries. Helps to create, revise, and maintain informational material to distribute to customers regarding code requirements, permit procedures and policies.

Stay current with changes to building codes, regulations, and industry best practices; participate in professional development and training to maintain certifications and improve departmental effectiveness. Job Requirements: Associate's degree in construction management, business, engineering or related field preferred from an accredited college. Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Four (4) years experience in general construction, and/or building and structural code compliance.

Knowledge of the following: Building codes and related laws and ordinances related to the enforcement of municipal codes. Drafting and construction principles, building plans and specifications. Legal procedures involved in enforcing building standards and municipal codes.

Licensures & Certificates (must be active and current.) International Code Council (ICC) Certification as one or more designations including Building Plans Examiner, Residential Plans Examiner, Residential Building Inspector, Commercial Building Inspector, Residential Plumbing Inspector, Commercial Building Inspector - or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment. Current Colorado driver's license with acceptable record. Physical Requirements and Work Environment: Must possess ability to work in a standard office setting; attend meetings at various sites within and away from the City with some evening and/or weekend hours required; strength to lift and carry materials up to 50 pounds; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate with employees and the public

Works primarily in clean, comfortable office environment; subject to many interruptions and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. Outside work, with exposure to elements, may require driving and walking during inclement weather. Late applications will not be accepted.
