What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Building Operating Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Building Operating Engineer, you need strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems, often supported by a technical diploma or engineering certifications. Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and relevant licensing (such as a Stationary Engineer license) is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you respond quickly to issues and work with tenants or vendors. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable building operations.

What are Building Operating Engineers?

Building Operating Engineers are skilled professionals responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of a building's mechanical, electrical, and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems. They ensure that all building systems function efficiently and safely, addressing issues as they arise and performing routine inspections. These engineers play a critical role in maintaining comfort, energy efficiency, and safety in commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. Their work often involves troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and coordination with contractors or other building services staff.

What is the difference between Building Operating Engineer vs Maintenance Technician?

AspectBuilding Operating EngineerMaintenance Technician
CertificationsStationary Engineer license, HVAC certificationsHVAC, electrical, plumbing certifications
Work EnvironmentCommercial buildings, industrial facilitiesVarious settings including residential, commercial, industrial
Job FocusOperating and maintaining building systemsPerforming repairs and routine maintenance
Employer & Industry UsageProperty management, facilities managementFacilities, maintenance companies, industrial plants

Building Operating Engineers primarily focus on operating and maintaining complex building systems like HVAC, boilers, and electrical systems, often requiring specialized licenses. Maintenance Technicians handle repairs and routine maintenance across various systems. While both roles ensure building functionality, Building Operating Engineers typically work in larger facilities with more technical systems, whereas Maintenance Technicians have a broader, more general maintenance scope.

What are some common challenges Building Operating Engineers face in maintaining large commercial facilities?

Building Operating Engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex HVAC systems, responding to unexpected equipment failures, and balancing preventive maintenance with urgent repair requests. They must also stay updated on building codes and environmental regulations, ensuring compliance while keeping systems running efficiently. Collaboration with other maintenance staff, vendors, and property management is essential, especially during large-scale repairs or upgrades.

Range Engineer, Senior
The Opportunity:
The Cyber Range Engineer is responsible for designing, building, operating, and sustaining cyber range environments that support training, exercises, and mission rehearsals for defensive and offensive cyber missions. This role directly supports the development of realistic, scalable, and secure virtual environments used to train cyber operators, test tools and tactics, and execute complex cyber exercise scenarios. The Cyber Range Engineer works closely with exercise planners, scenario developers, red and blue teams, and infrastructure engineers to ensure ranges accurately reflect real-world operational conditions and mission objectives. This position requires a strong combination of hands-on technical expertise, systems integration experience, and the ability to translate exercise requirements into functional cyber range architectures.
The Cyber Range Engineer designs and engineers virtualized and containerized environments that replicate enterprise, cloud, and mission-focused networks for cyber training and exercise execution. The engineer builds, configures, and maintains cyber range infrastructure, including virtual machines, networks, enclaves, and supporting services, to enable full-spectrum training objectives.
In this role, you'll integrate tools, scripts, and platforms used by red, blue, and white teams, as well as support exercise execution by troubleshooting technical issues, restoring environments, and adjusting range configurations in real time. You'll collaborate with scenario developers to implement scenario injects, adversary behaviors, and data flows that align with exercise objectives. You'll also be responsible for documenting range architectures, configurations, and standard operating procedures, and supporting continuous improvement of range capabilities, automation, and scalability.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 5+ years of experience supporting cyber operations, cyber training environments, or enterprise IT infrastructure, including in virtualized or lab-based environments
  • Experience building, configuring, and maintaining Linux and Windows systems in a cyber range, lab, or training environment
  • Experience with Active Directory basics such as domains, trusts, OUs, GPOs, DNS, and permissions, SIEMs such as Security Onion, logging and monitoring solutions, and proper sensor placement, and virtualization technologies such as VMware, KVM, or Hyper-V
  • Experience supporting cyber exercises, cyber training events, or operational test environments, including execution-phase troubleshooting and environment restoration
  • Experience with scripting or automation tools such as Bash, PowerShell, Python, or Ansible to support range deployment and sustainment
  • Knowledge of virtual networking concepts, including VLANs, routing, firewalls, and network segmentation
  • Ability to think critically, analyze complex technical issues, and troubleshoot problems in time-sensitive, execution-focused environments
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with exercise planners, scenario developers, red or blue teams, and infrastructure engineers and document range architectures, configurations, and standard operating procedures
  • Active TS/SCI clearance; willingness to take a polygraph exam
  • HS diploma or GED

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience supporting cyber ranges or exercises for the DoD, USCYBERCOM, or Joint organizations
  • Experience with container technologies, cloud-based range environments, or cyber range platforms
  • Experience integrating adversary emulation or penetration testing tools
  • Possession of excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • TS/SCI clearance with a polygraph
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Networking Certification such as Network+ or CCNA Certification

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; TS/SCI clearance is required.
