What is a building automation design engineer?

Building Automation Design Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement automated systems that control various functions within buildings, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and security. Their work ensures buildings operate efficiently, safely, and comfortably while optimizing energy usage. They collaborate with architects, contractors, and facility managers to integrate automation systems into new or existing structures. These engineers must have a strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, as well as proficiency in specialized software used for system design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a building automation design engineer?

To thrive as a Building Automation Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, HVAC systems, and building automation principles, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in system design. Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS), AutoCAD, PLC programming, and certifications like LEED or Tridium Niagara are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, project management, and effective communication with clients and contractors set top performers apart. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and sustainable building operations that meet client and regulatory expectations.

What are some typical challenges building automation design engineers face when integrating new technologies into existing building systems?

Building Automation Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, managing cybersecurity risks, and minimizing disruption to building operations. They must carefully assess existing infrastructure, coordinate with facility managers, and develop phased implementation plans to ensure smooth transitions. Staying updated with evolving industry standards and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams are essential to overcoming these obstacles and delivering effective automation solutions.

ABOUT US

MSC (Mechanical Service Corporation) is a leading mechanical service company specializing in complex HVAC, process cooling, and building automation systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional environments. As a recognized leader in the Northeast region since 1976, we are the technical authority on complex HVAC, process cooling, and building automation systems, with a practice that spans advanced diagnostics, design/build, retrofit and replacement, and long-term service.

JOB SUMMARY

MSC is seeking an experienced HVAC Design Engineer to lead design/build and retrofit project development. This is a technical role focused on originating and developing custom mechanical solutions for building owners in commercial, industrial, and institutional settings. The ideal candidate possesses the technical depth to assess existing conditions in the field, develop viable mechanical solutions, produce clear design documentation, and prepare accurate estimates covering equipment, materials, and labor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Design & Engineering

  • Conduct site surveys of existing mechanical systems to assess conditions and define project scope
  • Develop original HVAC and process cooling system designs for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities, with the ability to define scope and solutions independently where no plans or specifications exist
  • Perform load calculations and equipment sizing using industry-standard tools
  • Select appropriate equipment and specify systems, including air handling units, chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, piping, controls, and related components
  • Produce design drawings, schematics, and supporting documentation sufficient to define scope and support installation

Estimating and Proposal Development

  • Prepare detailed project estimates encompassing equipment, materials, and labor
  • Develop clear, professional proposals tailored to direct-to-owner sales opportunities
  • Collaborate with the sales team to present and refine proposals as needed

Project Coordination & Technical Support

  • Transition awarded projects to operations and field teams with thorough documentation and handoff
  • Provide ongoing technical support to field and office teams during project execution
  • Conduct site visits as needed to verify conditions and support installation

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of technical education and field experience
  • 5-10 years of experience in HVAC design/build work in commercial, industrial, or institutional environments
  • Demonstrated ability to develop mechanical system solutions without existing plans or specifications
  • Proficiency in load calculation and equipment selection software (HAP, Trace 700, or equivalent)
  • Experience producing design drawings using CAD or similar tools
  • Strong estimating skills, with the ability to accurately quantify equipment, material, and labor costs
  • Solid working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE and local mechanical codes
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Resourceful, self-directed, and comfortable managing multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus, but not required

SALARY & BENEFITS

  • Salary $140,000 - $160,000
  • Comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, employer-subsidized health insurance, 401(k) with match, and long-term and short-term disability insurance
