What is a building automation design engineer?

Building Automation Design Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement automated systems that control various functions within buildings, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and security. Their work ensures buildings operate efficiently, safely, and comfortably while optimizing energy usage. They collaborate with architects, contractors, and facility managers to integrate automation systems into new or existing structures. These engineers must have a strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, as well as proficiency in specialized software used for system design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a building automation design engineer?

To thrive as a Building Automation Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, HVAC systems, and building automation principles, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in system design. Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS), AutoCAD, PLC programming, and certifications like LEED or Tridium Niagara are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, project management, and effective communication with clients and contractors set top performers apart. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and sustainable building operations that meet client and regulatory expectations.

What are some typical challenges building automation design engineers face when integrating new technologies into existing building systems?

Building Automation Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, managing cybersecurity risks, and minimizing disruption to building operations. They must carefully assess existing infrastructure, coordinate with facility managers, and develop phased implementation plans to ensure smooth transitions. Staying updated with evolving industry standards and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams are essential to overcoming these obstacles and delivering effective automation solutions.

What is the difference between Building Automation Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectBuilding Automation Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering, certifications like LEED or BACnet, and knowledge of control systemsRequires a degree in mechanical engineering, PE license often preferred, and similar technical certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning and integrating building automation systems, collaborating with HVAC and electrical teamsDesigning mechanical systems, working on HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical equipment
Industry UsageCommon in building management, HVAC, and smart building projectsUsed across construction, manufacturing, and product design sectors
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for roles involving building systems and automationCompared for broader mechanical system design roles

The Building Automation Design Engineer focuses on designing and implementing building control systems, while the Mechanical Engineer works on mechanical systems like HVAC and plumbing. About the Role

Terco Inc. is seeking a hands-on Design Engineer to design, develop, and test machinery used in aerosol filling and packaging lines. This role combines mechanical design, automation, prototyping, testing, and field support. The Design Engineer will take equipment from concept through CAD design and validation, then support successful implementation for customers.

The ideal candidate will work closely with production, quality, and field service teams to ensure equipment is safe, efficient, reliable, and suited for handling pressurized liquids and propellants.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Development

·         Create detailed blueprints and 3D models using CAD software for new and existing equipment.

·         Design and modify components and machines used in aerosol manufacturing.

·         Develop and refine products based on performance data, customer feedback, and testing results.

·         Build and support prototypes and proof-of-concept models to validate new designs.

Automation & Controls

·         Define electrical component requirements for automated and VFD-controlled production lines.

·         Collaborate with programmers to develop PLC-based control systems that coordinate line operations.

·         Configure and support sensors, HMIs, and touchscreen interfaces for machine operators.

·         Supervise installation and in-house testing of electrical panels, HMIs, and PLC programs before customer release.

Testing & Quality

·         Conduct equipment testing and safety validation, including selected component testing.

·         Diagnose and resolve mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and software-related issues.

Safety & Compliance

·         Ensure designs comply with applicable safety standards for flammable, pressurized, and hazardous goods.

·         Prepare and maintain technical documentation, design reports, user manuals, and safety guides for internal teams and customers.

Qualifications

·         Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

·         Proven experience in machine design, ideally within packaging, filling, or process equipment industries.

·         Proficiency with CAD software, including SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

·         General knowledge of PLC programming platforms such as Siemens or Allen-Bradley, as well as industrial automation and control systems.

·         Understanding of pressure vessel design principles and material compatibility with propellants or flammable liquids is a strong plus.

·         Familiarity with safety standards relevant to pressurized and hazardous product handling, such as ATEX, OSHA, or regional equivalents.

·         Familiarity with metalworking, machining technology, and machine tool technology.

·         Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical issues.

·         Willingness to travel for on-site customer installations, training, and support as needed.
