What is a build manager?

Build Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the process of compiling, packaging, and deploying software applications. They coordinate between development, testing, and operations teams to ensure that software builds are stable, reliable, and delivered on time. Build Managers often use automation tools to streamline the build and deployment process, troubleshoot integration issues, and maintain build scripts or pipelines. Their role is crucial in continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) environments, helping to ensure smooth and efficient software releases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a build manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Build Manager, you need expertise in construction management, project scheduling, budgeting, and a relevant degree or certification in construction or engineering. Familiarity with project management software like MS Project or Primavera, as well as understanding of building codes and safety regulations, is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you effectively coordinate teams and resolve on-site challenges. These skills ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality and safety standards.

These challenges require strong organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to quickly resolve conflicts and adapt to changing project requirements. Successful Build Managers proactively set clear expectations, leverage project management tools, and regularly check in with stakeholders to keep projects on track.

Senior Project Manager - Residential Design-Build Construction

Build Great Projects. Lead Great People. Raise the Bar.

Bald Cypress Builders is a locally owned residential design-build remodeling company serving Lexington and Columbia, SC. We guide homeowners through the entire remodeling experience, from early planning and design through construction and final completion, with a strong focus on craftsmanship, transparency, and exceptional service. We are a growing, close-knit team built around three core values: People First, Leave Things Better, and Raise the Bar. We believe construction can be both highly professional and deeply personal, and we are looking for someone who shares that mindset.

Bald Cypress Builders is looking for an experienced Senior Project Manager to take a leadership role within our active construction team. This is more than a traditional project management position. You will manage residential remodeling projects of your own while also leading, mentoring, and supporting members of our construction team. You will help strengthen our systems, improve project execution, increase our project capacity, and ensure every homeowner receives the high-touch experience that sets Bald Cypress Builders apart.

The right person combines strong construction knowledge with true project management ability, leadership experience, and excellent client communication. You know how to keep schedules, budgets, trades, clients, and team members moving in the same direction, even when a project becomes complicated. As the company continues to grow, this position has the opportunity to evolve into a Director of Construction leadership role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage residential remodeling and addition projects from active construction through completion.
  • Oversee project schedules, budgets, quality standards, subcontractors, materials, and day-to-day execution.
  • Personally manage one or more projects while providing leadership across the broader construction department.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support current construction team members, including Project Management, Superintendent, and Carpentry functions.
  • Coordinate closely with trade partners, vendors, designers, and internal team members.
  • Maintain proactive, professional communication with homeowners throughout construction.
  • Anticipate project challenges, solve problems quickly, and keep projects progressing toward established goals and deadlines.
  • Help improve construction systems, processes, documentation, and team accountability.
  • Ensure jobsites and completed work meet Bald Cypress Builders' expectations for quality, professionalism, and client experience.
  • Use Buildertrend and Google Workspace to maintain project information, communication, schedules, and documentation.
  • Help build a construction department capable of supporting additional projects and future growth.

Qualifications

  • Strong project management experience with demonstrated responsibility for schedules, deadlines, budgets, and multiple project variables.
  • Residential construction, remodeling, custom home, or closely related construction experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience supervising, leading, or developing other employees.
  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, trades, jobsite coordination, and quality control.
  • Exceptional communication and client-service skills.
  • Ability to communicate calmly and professionally during challenging or high-pressure situations.
  • Highly organized, accountable, proactive, and solutions-oriented.
  • Comfortable balancing hands-on project management with department-level leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience working with construction management software; Buildertrend experience is a plus.
  • Comfortable working within Google Workspace and other technology used for project management.
  • Licensed South Carolina builder or similar professional credential is a plus, but not required.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel between the Lexington office and local project sites.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to successfully complete company pre-employment screening and satisfy driving requirements.

Pay & Benefits

  • Full-Time, W-2 Employment
  • Base salary: $85,000 - $95,000 per year, depending on experience
  • Bonus potential depending on defined goals and results
  • Vehicle or vehicle allowance support
  • Paid time off
