M&J Engineering is seeking qualified Bridge Inspectors to support CTDOT bridge inspection programs in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and FHWA requirements. This position involves performing field inspections of highway bridges and related structures, documenting structural conditions, and preparing inspection reports that are incorporated into CTDOT's bridge management system.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine, in-depth, special, and damage bridge inspections in accordance with:
    • FHWA National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS)
    • CTDOT Bridge Inspection Manual
  • Inspect and document condition of bridge components, including:
    • Decks, superstructures, substructures, bearings, joints, abutments, piers, and culverts
  • Identify, document, and rate structural deficiencies using NBIS condition rating criteria
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, field notes, sketches, and photographic documentation
  • Utilize access equipment as required, including:
    • Under-bridge inspection units (snooper trucks)
    • Lifts, ladders, rope access, and confined space methods
  • Coordinate inspection activities with:
    • CTDOT Bridge Management & Inspection units
    • Traffic control and maintenance forces
  • Ensure compliance with jobsite safety requirements, including:
    • Traffic control
    • Fall protection
    • Confined space procedures
  • Support QA/QC reviews and participate in field reviews and meetings as required
  • Assist with load rating data collection and structural assessments when applicable

Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or
  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology with demonstrated bridge inspection experience

Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of bridge inspection experience meeting FHWA NBIS qualification requirements

Required Certification
  • FHWA-approved NBIS Bridge Inspection Training

Preferred / Project-Dependent Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Connecticut or ability to obtain by reciprocity
  • Completion of FHWA-approved NHI Bridge Inspection Courses
    (e.g., NHI 130055 / NHI 130056)
  • CTDOT-approved bridge inspection qualifications, as required
  • Experience with AASHTOWare Bridge Management
  • Prior experience on CTDOT bridge inspection contracts

Safety & Technical Certifications (Preferred)
  • OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction Safety
  • Fall Protection
  • Confined Space Entry
  • First Aid / CPR

Skills & Additional Requirements
  • Familiarity with CTDOT Bridge Inspection Manual and NBIS reporting procedures
  • Ability to work at heights, over water, and in active traffic environments
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic field data collection tools
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel statewide within Connecticut

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and bridge components
  • Ability to lift inspection equipment and perform hands-on field inspections
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, or off-hours as required by traffic conditions
