Familiarity with inspection tools, nondestructive testing methods, and bridge management software like AASHTOWare is typically required. Work EnvironmentField inspections, on-site assessmentsDesign offices, project planning
Industry UsageTransportation agencies, civil engineering firmsConstruction, infrastructure, building design

Bridge Inspection Engineers focus on inspecting and assessing the safety of bridges, often working in the field. Structural Engineers design and analyze structures, including bridges, but typically work more in offices on projects. Both roles require similar certifications and are integral to infrastructure safety, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ.

What is a bridge inspection engineer?

Bridge Inspection Engineers are specialized civil engineers responsible for assessing the safety, structural integrity, and condition of bridges. They conduct detailed inspections, often using visual checks, specialized equipment, and sometimes drones or other technologies to identify wear, damage, or potential hazards. Their findings inform maintenance, repairs, and safety improvements to ensure that bridges remain safe for public use. These engineers often work for government transportation agencies, consulting firms, or construction companies, and must adhere to strict standards and regulations.

What are common challenges faced by bridge inspection engineers and how can they be overcome?

Bridge Inspection Engineers often face challenges such as working in difficult weather conditions, accessing hard-to-reach bridge components, and ensuring safety while inspecting active traffic structures. Overcoming these challenges requires a combination of proper training, the use of specialized equipment like drones or under-bridge inspection vehicles, and strict adherence to safety protocols. Effective communication and coordination with other team members, such as traffic control and maintenance crews, are also essential to minimize risks and ensure thorough inspections.

In this role, you will lead bridge inspection programs for state, federal, railroad, and local agency clients, overseeing the planning, execution, and delivery of inspection services for bridges and ancillary transportation structures. You will provide both project management and technical leadership while ensuring inspections are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requirements, and client-specific standards.

This position is ideal for a licensed engineer who enjoys balancing project management, field operations, technical analysis, and client interaction. You will have the opportunity to lead complex bridge inspection assignments, mentor inspection staff, and contribute to the continued growth of PRIME AE’s bridge inspection practice.

This role requires a strong commitment to safety, technical excellence, and client service while working in a variety of field environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise bridge inspection teams performing inspections of highway bridges, railroad bridges, and ancillary transportation structures.
  • Review bridge plans, inspection histories, and supporting documentation to develop inspection strategies and field plans.
  • Coordinate field activities with clients, railroads, regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and equipment vendors.
  • Develop and implement project-specific safety plans, traffic control plans, and field operation procedures.
  • Perform and oversee bridge inspections in accordance with NBIS, FRA, PennDOT, and client-specific requirements.
  • Evaluate structural conditions, identify deficiencies, and provide engineering recommendations regarding maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, or replacement needs.
  • Operate and supervise the use of specialized bridge inspection access equipment, including under-bridge inspection units, bucket trucks, and aerial lifts.
  • Prepare and review inspection reports, field notes, photographs, sketches, and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Monitor project performance and ensure deliverables are completed on schedule, within budget, and to established quality standards.
  • Mentor and develop bridge inspection staff and support their professional growth and certification requirements.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients and participate in project meetings, presentations, and technical discussions.

What You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Pennsylvania required.
  • Minimum 5 years of bridge inspection experience, including progressively responsible project and field leadership responsibilities.

  • Experience planning and leading bridge inspection field operations, including access equipment coordination and safety management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare technical reports and interact professionally with clients and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively leading field and office teams.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including heights, confined spaces, and varying weather conditions.
