Job Description
To support our continued growth in New England, CDM Smith is seeking an experienced Bridge Engineer to join our well-established and expanding bridge design practice in the Boston area. This role is ideal for a technically strong engineer who wants to lead meaningful work, influence project outcomes, and help shape the future of bridge design across Massachusetts and the Northeast. In this position, you will provide technical leadership on a wide range of bridge projects-from routine rehabilitation to complex, signature structures-serving MassDOT, MBTA, Massport, and other major transportation owners. You will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle, from planning and scoping through PS&E development and construction engineering services. Why CDM Smith? We are leaders in the application of accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques and advanced structural modeling, and we work across all major delivery methods including Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, and CM-at-Risk. This role offers the opportunity to work on projects that are visible, technically challenging, and regionally impactful. Key Responsibilities
Serve as a key technical contributor and task lead on bridge design projects throughout Massachusetts and New England. Lead and participate in all phases of bridge design, including scoping, alternatives analysis, and PS&E development. Design a variety of bridge types, including steel, concrete, prestressed, and post-tensioned structures. Perform design of associated structures such as retaining walls, foundations, and gantries. Conduct bridge load ratings and support inspection and rehabilitation efforts. Participate in bridge and culvert inspections. Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers. Contribute to the growth of the Massachusetts and New England bridge practice through strong leadership and the delivery of high-quality, constructible designs.
Skills & Abilities
Strong Knowledge of computer assisted design and drafting (CADD) 3D and 4D software and practices. Expert Knowledge of engineer principles of design. Expert Knowledge of Microsoft business software (excel, word, etc.). Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Strong knowledge of federal, state and local regulations. Ability to arrange/layout structural systems and elements for strength, stability, constructability, and construction economy. Strong knowledge of engineering analysis/design software (e.g. Revit, STAAD, RISA).
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil, Architectural or Structural Engineering or related discipline. Professional engineering (PE) license. 7 years of related experience. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
PE license in Massachusetts; reciprocity with CT and NH a plus. Massachusetts Structural Engineer (SE) licensure. 7+ years of MassDOT bridge design experience. Experience with NHDOT, CTDOT, RIDOT, Massport, and/or MBTA projects. Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, and/or OpenBridge. Working knowledge of structural analysis and modeling software such as STAAD, CSI Bridge, MIDAS, AASHTOWare, or LARSA 4D. Experience with movable bridges and/or tunnel design or analysis. Strong written and verbal communication skills.

CDM Smith is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. This pay range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels for the geographic location assigned to the position. In addition to geographic location, a candidate's salary is determined by several other factors including, but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, relevant work experience, skills, required certifications, and education/training.
Additional Compensation
All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
