Job description

A general mason builds, repairs, and restores structures like walls, walkways, and foundations using brick, stone, concrete block, and mortar.


Key Responsibilities


  • Read Blueprints: Follow technical drawings and blueprints to calculate materials and measure layouts.
  • Cut and Shape: Cut brick, stone, or concrete to required sizes using hand tools and power saws.
  • Mix and Apply: Mix mortar, grout, or cement and spread it to lay blocks and bricks securely.
  • Align and Level: Use plumb lines and levels to check that structures are straight and horizontally or vertically aligned.
  • Clean and Polish: Remove excess mortar, smooth joints, and clean finished surfaces.
  • Repair and Restore: Patch damaged masonry, tuckpoint old mortar, and restore historic or worn structures.


Skills and Qualifications


  • Physical Strength: Ability to lift heavy materials, stand for long periods, and work in all weather conditions.
  • Tool Proficiency: Skilled with trowels, jointers, levels, chisels, and masonry saws.
  • Math Skills: Basic math to calculate angles, dimensions, and material quantities.
  • Experience: Usually gained through a formal 2- to 4-year apprenticeship program or on-the-job training
  • Background Check: Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
