Job Description
Virginia Peninsula Community College changes lives, empowers students to succeed, and enhances the social and economic vitality of the region through high-quality education and workforce training, excellent service, and innovative partnerships. The Learning Resources Center (LRC) is an integral part of the academic units that report to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The LRC advances the mission of the college through the comprehensive, readily accessible collection of VPCC curriculum related informational materials, instructional technologies, and other academic support services that meet the educational needs of students, faculty, and staff.
Provides individual and small group instruction and assistance to currently enrolled students who encounter writing-related problems in their VPCC courses. Provides a variety of writing-related instructional resources. In cooperation with other Tutoring Center instructional assistants and the Tutoring Coordinator, acts as a liaison between the Writing Center and the instructional faculty of the English Department, as well as between the Writing Center and other college programs.
This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (Clery Act) and Responsible Employee (Title IX).
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
• Demonstrated writing, teaching and/or tutorial experience at the high school or two-year college level.
• Experience working with adult learners and underserved populations.
• Experience with learning management systems such as Canvas or Blackboard.
Knowledge:
• Demonstrated understanding of competency in composition and rhetoric; experience with English, English education, or related Liberal Arts programs preferred.
• Familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software, databases and electronic communications.
Skills:
• Excellent communication and strong listening skills
• Excellent interpersonal and time management skills.
• Analytic problem-solving skills.
Abilities:
• Ability to create a safe and engaging learning environment.
• Patience, flexibility, ability to vary teaching methods and resources according to student needs.
