What is a brain machine interface?

A Brain Machine Interface (BMI) job involves developing technologies that connect the human brain with computers or external devices. Professionals in this field work on designing, testing, and improving neural interfaces to restore lost sensory or motor functions, enhance cognitive abilities, or enable direct brain communication with machines. Roles may include neuroscientists, engineers, and software developers collaborating to advance BMI applications in healthcare, assistive technology, and neuroprosthetics.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in a brain machine interface position?

Professionals in Brain Machine Interface roles usually divide their time between designing experiments, analyzing neural data, developing and testing interface prototypes, and collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams such as neuroscientists, engineers, and clinicians. They may also be involved in writing technical documentation, participating in regulatory compliance activities, and keeping up with the latest scientific literature. Depending on the project, work can flow between laboratory research and computational tasks, requiring flexibility and an eagerness to learn new techniques. The environment is often collaborative and research-focused, providing ample opportunities to contribute to exciting advancements in neurotechnology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the brain machine interface position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Brain Machine Interface (BMI) role, you need a strong background in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, computer science, or a related field, often supported by advanced degrees or specialized training. Proficiency with signal processing software (such as MATLAB or Python), brain imaging tools, and hardware prototyping is typically required, along with familiarity with regulatory standards. Strong problem-solving skills, collaboration, and attention to detail help individuals excel in multi-disciplinary teams working at the intersection of biology and technology. These competencies are crucial for developing safe, effective interfaces and driving innovation in this fast-evolving field.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop data curation strategies for user interaction and BCI data

  • Implement BCI decoding algorithms as performant software

  • Evaluate software with simulated and real neural data, as well as with BCI hardware in the loop

Job description

Software Engineer Own the software stack for real-time brain-computer interface data decoding across research and clinical trials

Location: Oakland, California

Compensation: $120,000 - 150,000 USD / year

About The Role Software Engineer

Brain-related illness is one of the last great frontiers in medicine, not because the brain is unknowable, but because it has been inaccessible. Paradromics is building a brain-computer interface (BCI) platform that records brain activity at the highest possible resolution: the individual neuron. AI algorithms then decode this massive amount of brain-data, enabling the seamless translation of thought into treatments.

Our first clinical application, the Connexus ยฎ BCI, will help people who are unable to speak, due to ALS, spinal cord injuries, and stroke, to communicate independently through digital devices. However, the capabilities of our BCI platform go far beyond our first application. With the brain in direct communication with digital devices, we can leverage technology to transform how we treat conditions ranging from sensory and motor deficits to untreatable mental illness.

The Role

As a Software Engineer at Paradromics, you'll work closely with our team of Scientists and Engineers to develop software that enables our clinical applications. You will help design software to restore communication ability for our BCI users, enabling successful clinical studies of the Connexus System.

Responsibilities
  • Develop data curation strategies for user interaction and BCI data
  • Realize BCI decoding algorithms as performant software
  • Evaluate software with simulated and real neural data, as well as with our BCI hardware in the loop
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to the development of new features and tools
  • Work closely with our engineering, neuroscience, and quality teams to identify and capture needs and requirements
  • Regularly travel between our Austin and Oakland offices
Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent real world experience
  • 3+ years of professional experience relevant to this role
Required Qualifications
  • Highly proficient in Python
  • Experience with Rust, C++, or Go
  • Familiarity with machine learning concepts and experience collaborating with machine learning practitioners
  • Demonstrated prior professional experience with multiple programming languages
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of operating systems concepts and performant software
  • Familiarity with signal processing / time series data processing concepts and algorithms.
  • Experience working on projects involving quality management systems, such as medical device development, aviation, finance, defense

Paradromics is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin Salary: $120,000-150,000 base
