What is a Brain Computer Interface job?

A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) job involves developing systems that enable direct communication between the brain and external devices. Professionals in this field work on hardware and software to interpret neural signals, often for medical, assistive, or neurotechnology applications. Roles can include research, software engineering, signal processing, and machine learning to improve BCIs' accuracy and functionality. These jobs are common in healthcare, neuroscience, gaming, and AI-driven human augmentation industries.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Brain Computer Interface roles?

Professionals in Brain Computer Interface roles often face challenges related to accurately interpreting complex neural signals, minimizing noise in data, and ensuring that BCI systems are intuitive for end-users. They frequently collaborate with neuroscientists, engineers, software developers, and clinicians to overcome technical and usability barriers. Balancing research innovation with real-world applicability can be demanding, and staying current with rapidly advancing technology is essential. These challenges make the field dynamic and rewarding for those passionate about shaping the future of human-computer interaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Brain Computer Interface position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Brain Computer Interface role, you typically need a strong background in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, or computer science, coupled with experience in signal processing and neural data analysis. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB, Python, EEG/MEG systems, and relevant certifications in neurotechnology are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication skills are essential for working on multidisciplinary teams and translating research into practical applications. These skills ensure that you can design, develop, and refine advanced BCI systems that meet both technical and user needs in this rapidly evolving field.

Job description

About Synchron

Synchronโ€™s vision is to build non-surgical brainโ€“computer interfaces at global scale that protect the fundamental human rights of freedom of expression and autonomy. Our first mission is to develop motor decoders that restore the ability of 15 million people with paralysis to interact with the digital world. Our second mission is to develop whole-brain cognitive decoders that enable hundreds of millions of people with cognitive decline to preserve and expand their agency as cognition changes over time. In pursuing these goals, we aim not only to help humans flourish, but also to drive fundamental discoveries in human intelligence. Our team operates at the intersection of healthcare and technology, translating breakthrough research into real-world, safety-critical systems.

Employment: Full-Time

Location: Brooklyn, New York (Onsite)

About the Role

We are seeking an energetic, personable, and adaptive researcher to work directly with the pioneering participants of our brain-computer interface (BCI) product. This role bridges human neuroscience research, applied machine learning, and real-world BCI deployment. You will work closely with our machine learning, research engineering, clinical, and product teams to collect, analyze, and interpret neural and behavioral data, contributing directly to the improvement of real-time neural decoding models and user experience. Your work will directly translate to the ability of our users to control the BCI.

The ideal candidate is resourceful, learns fast, handles uncertainties strongly, and has excellent experiment operations. You should be as comfortable speaking with participants and their caregivers as you are experimenting with model training pipelines or analyzing data.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research sessions with BCI users, including setup, calibration, and structured data collection.
  • Analyze and interpret multimodal data (neural, behavioral, video) to inform product and research decisions.
  • Develop and iterate on machine learning models for neural signal decoding and behavioral prediction.
  • Collaborate with machine learning and research engineering teams to align experimental protocols with product goals.
  • Document findings and methodologies for internal and external dissemination.
  • Support the design of human research protocols and ensure compliance with ethics and safety standards.
  • Travel regularly as required to work with participants, clinicians, and collaborators.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s, Masterโ€™s, or PhD in Neuroscience, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Expertise in Python, with model training workflows (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, metaflow), and data science frameworks and tools (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, matplotlib, seaborn).
  • Expertise in machine learning techniques and applications for real-time systems
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve under uncertainty and adapt quickly to new environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working directly with BCI users and research participants.
  • Ability to travel frequently to the participants for research sessions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting or supporting human research.
  • Familiarity with brainโ€“computer interface systems or electrophysiological data.
  • Experience designing or executing experiments with human participants.
  • Experience in applied research environments integrating software, hardware, and data science.
Compensation
  • The base salary range for this role is $150,000 โ€“ $220,000USD depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.
  • In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for discretionary bonuses and/or equity grants, subject to board approval and company policy.
