How much do box truck loads jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for box truck loads in the United States is $20.60, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $21.63 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are box truck loads?

Box truck loads refer to shipments or freight that are specifically suited for transportation in box trucks, which are medium-sized vehicles with an enclosed cargo area. These loads can include furniture, appliances, retail goods, or any items that need protection from weather and theft. Box truck loads are often utilized by small businesses, moving companies, and independent owner-operators looking for local or regional delivery work. Finding box truck loads typically involves using freight load boards, brokers, or logistics companies that match carriers with available shipments.

What is the difference between Box Truck Loads vs Delivery Driver?

AspectBox Truck LoadsDelivery Driver
CredentialsDriver's license, commercial driving license (CDL) often preferredDriver's license, sometimes CDL depending on cargo
Work EnvironmentLoading/unloading cargo, driving box trucks, warehouse or client sitesDriving to deliver goods, customer interaction, route navigation
Industry UsageLogistics, freight, moving servicesCourier, parcel, food delivery, retail

Box Truck Loads involve transporting large cargo in box trucks, often requiring loading and unloading at various locations. Delivery Drivers focus on transporting goods directly to customers, emphasizing route management and customer service. While both roles require driving skills and licenses, Box Truck Loads typically involve handling larger freight, whereas Delivery Drivers concentrate on timely deliveries and customer interactions.

What are some common challenges faced by box truck drivers when securing loads and how can they be addressed?

Box truck drivers often face challenges such as inconsistent load availability, competition with other drivers, and navigating logistics platforms. To address these, it’s important to build strong relationships with reliable brokers, stay up-to-date with load boards, and maintain a good reputation for timely and professional service. Networking and joining online forums or local trucking groups can also help drivers access more consistent loads and valuable industry insights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Box Truck Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Box Truck Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (often a CDL-B), safe driving skills, and knowledge of DOT regulations. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and basic vehicle maintenance tools is typically required. Strong time management, customer service orientation, and reliability help you stand out in this position. These skills ensure timely, safe deliveries and positive client relationships, which are critical for success in the transportation industry.

Job description

Box Truck Driver

National Decorating Service is looking for a full-time Box Truck Driver to support our commercial painting operations throughout Chicago. This role is responsible for driving a 18 ft box truck from our warehouse to active jobsites, primarily in downtown Chicago, delivering materials and equipment to our painting crews, and picking up materials from completed jobs.

This is not a seasonal or temporary driving role. We are looking for a reliable, experienced driver who is comfortable operating a larger vehicle in downtown Chicago, navigating traffic, loading zones, jobsite conditions, and coordinating directly with field crews.

Schedule & Compensation

This is a full-time position with an early morning schedule (approx. 5am - 2pm). The typical workday will begin early to support jobsite preparation, material deliveries, and daily field operations.

$26$30/hour, based on experience

Responsibilities
  • Safely operate a 18 ft box truck throughout the Chicagoland area, including regular deliveries into downtown Chicago.
  • Load trucks at the warehouse with paint, wallcovering, tools, ladders, equipment, supplies, and other jobsite materials.
  • Unload materials and equipment at jobsites and coordinate with painters, foremen, or project team members upon arrival.
  • Follow delivery instructions from the Warehouse Manager and ensure the correct materials are delivered to the correct jobsite.
  • Pick up leftover materials, tools, equipment, and supplies from completed jobs and return them to the warehouse.
  • Keep the truck organized, clean, and ready for daily use.
  • Perform basic vehicle checks and keep tabs on maintenance needs, including tires, oil, fluids, lights, general cleanliness, and overall condition.
  • Communicate maintenance concerns, damage, delays, missing materials, or jobsite issues to the Warehouse Manager.
  • Assist with warehouse organization, staging materials, and preparing job deliveries when not on the road.
  • Follow company safety expectations while driving, loading, unloading, and working around jobsites.
Qualifications
  • Prior experience driving box trucks, larger delivery vehicles, or similar commercial vehicles.
  • Comfortable driving and parking in downtown Chicago.
  • Valid driver's license and clean/reliable driving record.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, load, and unload materials and equipment.
  • Dependable, punctual, and comfortable with an early morning schedule.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with warehouse staff, painters, foremen, and project managers.
  • Ability to follow directions and keep track of multiple jobsite deliveries and pickups.
  • Construction, warehouse, painting, or building materials experience is a plus.
  • CDL is not required, but larger vehicle experience is strongly preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to load and unload a box truck throughout the day.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, push, pull, and climb in and out of the truck.
  • Ability to work in warehouse and jobsite conditions.
