The COS Material Handler/Driver is responsible for receiving, filling, and shipping products accurately and efficiently, as well as ensuring the safe transporting and arrival of products, in a timely manner, to our customers and other store locations. May be assigned all or some of the various warehouse job functions including but not limited to receiving, order fulfillment, product picking, wrapping and packing, stock replenishment, customer will call, and inventory cycle counts. This role is also responsible for driving, route sequencing, order verification, loading and unloading orders into company/customer vehicle, return service, sharing feedback from customers, as well as maintenance, upkeep, and repairs of the company vehicles and warehouse equipment. The Material Handler/Driver position is required to possess a valid drivers’ license at all times and must meet all state and federal driving regulations.

  • Operates basic power equipment (i.e. electric pallet, walkie rider, sit-down forklift) in a safe and efficient manner to locate, put away, stack, and move checked-in products to correct storage locations on a daily basis. This includes stocking, filling bin boxes, facing cartons, checking for product mixing, and rotating product where needed; monitoring stock on shelves or bins; replenishing stock from reserves; maintaining control of products in reserve stock area or will call area.
  • Receives product by unloading trucks using forklift, pallet jack, electric pallet jack, or by hand.
  • Ensures shipments received are in good condition and accurate by: inspecting freight for damage and signing freight bills; verifying quantity ordered versus quantity received; checking all shipments against packing lists; and completing necessary paperwork for reimbursements or discrepancies.
  • Ensures all required products have verified bar code labels and readable Johnstone stock numbers by scanning products, printing labels, resolving labeling discrepancies, and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Fills orders by picking, packing items into cartons, and stacking them in a manner that minimizes damage, entering items into scan gun, and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Documents the shipment of hazardous materials by labeling cartons correctly and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Prepares orders by: preparing trucks for shipments; palletizing and wrapping orders; loading pallets and pieces into trucks; placing packing list in last skid; and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Maintains current accuracy and efficiency standards and follows all standard operating procedures.
  • Participates in inventory cycle counts and other related projects in current location and/or the market as assigned.
  • Assists in the maintenance and upkeep of all warehouse machinery and equipment.
  • Maintains a safe work environment by working in a safe manner, following safety rules, and maintaining a clean work area. Promptly reports any safety or maintenance concerns to supervisors.
  • Always wears protective equipment according to company policies and procedures. Accesses Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) as needed and when appropriate.
  • Maintains required hazardous materials, forklift, and other internal and external certifications as needed.
  • Maintains professional communications when interacting with customers and coworkers. Treats all customers and coworkers with a helpful and courteous attitude.

Driving Responsibilities:

  • Maintains positive relationships with customers by providing exceptional service that includes accurate and timely delivery of products.
  • Serves as a key field contact for gathering accurate customer service and delivery expectations.
  • Safely operates company vehicles and equipment consistent with DOT, state, federal, and company standards.
  • Maintains cleanliness of inside of truck, cab, box, and all assigned work areas.
  • Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned vehicle(s)/equipment; refers defects, issues, or needs for repairs to the supervisor promptly.
  • Loads and unloads trucks. Checks and verifies deliveries against sales and transfer orders.
  • Prepares routes and follows schedules and deadlines for delivery, shipping, receiving, and other related tasks.
  • Drives straight body vehicles including box truck to deliver supplies and equipment to customer’s place of business, job site, or other Johnstone store locations.
  • Maintains telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive expedited delivery instructions, utilizing communication methods safely and in accordance with all requirements and expectations.
  • Immediately communicates delivery, traffic, safety, and customer issues to their supervisor.
  • Record sales and/or delivery information as applicable. Completes manifest with pictures, signatures, and any returns by way of iPad or manual completion.
  • Returns vehicle at the end of day, verifying it is fully fueled; completes monthly driver log and any associated paperwork; ensures the vehicle is secured.
  • Returns gas receipts, monies, vehicle inspection logs, and any other paperwork necessary.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Required:
    • High School Diploma/GED; 1+ years of truck driving experience (26 ft vehicle or larger) or 1 year operating Johnstone equipment/vehicles under supervision; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Experience operating forklift and other warehouse equipment safely and competently.
  • Preferred:
  • 6+ months of experience in a warehouse and/or distribution facility, preferably in HVAC/R or related field.
  • Experience with a picker, RF scanner, and inventory management systems.
  • Knowledge of HVAC wholesale industry, principles, and practices.
  • Previous experience with OSHA and safety regulations and procedures.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

  • Must have a valid drivers’ license with a driving record indicating a safe driving history acceptable to the company; must remain eligible at all times to drive a commercial motor vehicle under applicable state and federal laws and FMCSA regulations.
  • Forklift certification required, or willingness to obtain on the job.

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to utilize necessary technology to complete tasks, GPS, mobile Proof of Delivery (POD) devices, RF equipment, and ERP software. Must be able to read a map and mapping applications accurately.
  • Ability to read, add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to work safely in all job tasks.
  • Skill in operation of delivery vehicles and power equipment, including forklift, pallet jack, and cherry picker; ability to operate a lift gate safely and effectively.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and maneuver large/heavy products or pieces of equipment while working within established safety guidelines.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, and walk on a concrete floor for much of the workday. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to lift and carry and/or move up to 50 pounds and required to lift more weight with mechanical assistance or the assistance of team members.
