What is a boring machine?

Boring machines are specialized industrial tools used to enlarge or finish the inside diameter of holes that have already been drilled or cast. They are commonly used in metalworking, woodworking, and construction to produce precise and smooth holes in materials like metal, wood, or concrete. Boring machines can be operated manually, semi-automatically, or fully automatically, and are essential for tasks such as tunnel construction, engine cylinder finishing, and heavy manufacturing. Their accuracy and efficiency make them vital in industries where precision and consistency are required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a boring machine operator?

To thrive as a Boring Machine Operator, you need mechanical aptitude, experience with precision measuring tools, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with CNC machinery, blueprints, and relevant certifications such as OSHA safety training are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and the ability to work independently are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate machining, adherence to safety standards, and efficient production processes.

What are some common challenges faced by boring machine operators, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Boring Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as machine calibration issues, tool wear, and maintaining tight tolerances on precision parts. Addressing these challenges requires careful attention to machine setup, routine inspection and replacement of cutting tools, and consistent monitoring of measurements during operation. Operators frequently collaborate with maintenance teams and quality control inspectors to ensure equipment runs smoothly and products meet specifications. Ongoing training and communication within the team are key to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring safe, efficient production.

Job description

About Us
Closet Factory Austin designs, builds, and installs custom closets, pantries, garages, and home offices for homeowners across Central Texas. We're a growing franchise of a national brand, and our shop runs a five-station production flow: Cutting → Edgebanding → Boring → Drawers. We build it right the first time so our installers can hit their dates and customers have their beautiful product installed on time.
The Role
We're hiring a Senior Cabinet Maker. You're the person who can run any station, take on the hardest jobs, and set the quality bar for everyone else through the work you produce. You'll report to our Shop Manager and work alongside the rest of the shop crew.
If you've spent time in custom cabinet, closet, or millwork shops, you take pride in clean cuts and tight reveals, and you'd rather be on the floor building than behind a desk, this is your seat.
What You'll Do
  • Build complete jobs end-to-end across all stations (Cutting, Edgebanding, Boring, Drawers)
  • Take the lead on our most complex builds: large jobs, tricky materials, custom requests
  • Read and interpret cutlists and shop drawings; catch errors before the saw runs
  • Operate the panel saw, edgebander, CNC/boring machine, and drawer box assembly to a high standard
  • Cut in-house TFL backs, ⅝" birch drawer boxes, flat base molding, and flat crown
  • Self-check every part you produce: wrong cuts, missed bores, and bad edges don't move forward
  • Show newer crew members the right way through the work itself
  • Flag recurring problems to the shop manager (designer errors, material issues, machine wear) so they can be fixed at the root
  • Keep your station clean, organized, and safe
What You Bring
Required
  • 3+ years in a custom cabinet, closet, millwork, or architectural casework shop
  • Strong hands-on experience with panel saws, edgebanders, and boring machines (CNC a plus)
  • Can read shop drawings and cutlists fluently. Spot mistakes before they go out to a client.
  • Excellent fundamentals: square, plumb, clean edges. Cares about the quality of the product they send out.
  • Reliable, on time, able to lift 100+ lbs, and stand all day.

Nice to Have
  • Experience with cabinet design software
  • Strong with melamine/TFL, hardwood plywood, and laminate work
  • Drawer box assembly experience (undermount and side mount slides)
  • CNC router setup and operation
What We Offer
  • Senior-level pay based on experience
  • Health marketplace reimbursement monthly
  • Paid time off
  • A shop that's actively investing in better equipment, better systems, and better processes
  • A team that respects the craft and the people who do it
  • No politics, no babysitting, just good work
