Head Coach - Cheer

Van Jr. Sr. High School

Salary: As per Boone County Schools Extra-Curricular Salary Schedule

Position Purpose

The Coach is responsible for assisting in the development, organization, coordination, and supervision of the school's athletic program in the assigned sport. The Coach shall promote academic achievement, sportsmanship, teamwork, character development, leadership, and athletic excellence while ensuring compliance with all West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC), Boone County Schools, and school regulations.

Qualifications

  • Holds valid WVSSAC coaching authorization and all required certifications.
  • Maintains current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications as required.
  • Meets all Boone County Schools and WVSSAC employment requirements.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of sport-specific fundamentals, coaching techniques, and student-athlete development.
  • Possesses effective leadership, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Successfully completes all required background checks and training.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and community members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Administration

  • Organize, administer, and support all aspects of the assigned athletic program.
  • Plan and conduct practices, conditioning sessions, competitions, and skill development activities.
  • Instruct student-athletes in sport-specific fundamentals, techniques, game strategies, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Promote a positive team culture emphasizing discipline, responsibility, respect, integrity, and character.
  • Support the development of student-athletes for future participation and success.

Student-Athlete Development

  • Encourage academic achievement and monitor student-athlete eligibility requirements.
  • Foster leadership, responsibility, good citizenship, and personal growth among participants.
  • Promote sportsmanship and ethical conduct at all times.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of student-athletes during practices, competitions, travel, and team activities.
  • Provide appropriate supervision of student-athletes at all school-sponsored events.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain required records, inventories, rosters, eligibility documentation, and other reports as required.
  • Assist with scheduling, transportation coordination, event preparation, and other operational duties.
  • Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, school administration, athletic department personnel, officials, and community stakeholders.
  • Attend meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities as required.
  • Ensure compliance with WVSSAC rules, Boone County Schools policies, and school procedures.

Equipment and Facilities

  • Maintain, inventory, secure, and account for all equipment assigned to the athletic program.
  • Report equipment, facility, and safety concerns to the Athletic Director and Principal.
  • Promote proper care and stewardship of school property, athletic facilities, and equipment.
  • Assist in preparing facilities for practices, contests, and special events.

Community and Public Relations

  • Represent Boone County Schools and the assigned school in a professional manner at all times.
  • Promote positive relationships with parents, community members, officials, media representatives, and opposing schools.
  • Support athletic department initiatives, school activities, and program events.
  • Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes and the school community.

Physical Demands

The position requires standing, walking, demonstrating athletic skills, lifting and carrying equipment, traveling with teams, and supervising student-athletes during practices and competitions. The Coach must be able to safely and effectively perform all duties associated with the operation of the athletic program.

Evaluation

Performance shall be evaluated by the Principal and Athletic Director in accordance with Boone County Schools policies and procedures.

Terms of Employment

Salary shall be established according to the Boone County Schools Supplemental Salary Schedule and approved by the Boone County Board of Education.
