Book Reading information

What is a book reading?

A Book Reading job typically involves reading books aloud for various purposes, such as audiobooks, public readings, or literacy programs. Professionals in this role may work as audiobook narrators, educators, or storytellers in libraries, schools, or events. Strong reading skills, clear pronunciation, and expressive storytelling abilities are essential. Some positions may require experience in voice acting or public speaking.

What does a book reader do?

A typical day for a Professional Book Reader or Narrator involves preparing and rehearsing scripts, recording book chapters in a soundproof environment, and collaborating with audio engineers or producers for editing and feedback. You may spend time researching proper pronunciations, character accents, and narrative pacing to enhance listener experience. Some days are devoted to retakes or revisions based on editorial direction, while others might include team meetings to align on project goals. The work is project-based and deadlines are common, so effective time management and self-motivation are key. Team interactions are frequent, ensuring the final audio product meets publishing or client standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in book reading, and why are they important?

To excel as a Professional Book Reader or Narrator, you need excellent reading comprehension, clear articulation, voice modulation skills, and, often, experience in literature or performing arts. Familiarity with audio recording equipment, editing software, and sometimes certification in voice acting or narration is commonly valued. Outstanding soft skills include attention to detail, patience, and the ability to interpret and convey different tones and emotions. These abilities ensure that book readings or audiobooks are engaging, accessible, and meet industry quality standards.

Job description

Bookstore & Home Décor Retail Sales Associate
Permanent Part-Time Position
The Beloved Book Co. and Monroe 816
130 Collective | Garnett, Kansas
Job Overview
The Beloved Book Co. and Monroe 816 are looking for a friendly, dependable, and creative Retail Sales Associate to join our team. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys connecting with customers, recommending books, styling home décor, creating attractive displays, and helping provide a warm and memorable shopping experience.
This is a permanent, year-round part-time position, not a seasonal or temporary role. Applicants must be available to work a consistent schedule Tuesday through Friday throughout the year, with occasional Saturdays and evenings for special events, holidays, or other store needs.

Because this position serves both The Beloved Book Co. and Monroe 816, the right candidate will be comfortable assisting customers with everything from finding their next great read to selecting décor, gifts, and accessories for their homes.
Responsibilities
  • Warmly greet customers and provide friendly, attentive service.
  • Ask thoughtful questions to understand customers’ needs and help them find the right products.
  • Offer book recommendations for a variety of interests, genres, ages, and occasions.
  • Help customers coordinate home décor, gifts, accessories, and seasonal items.
  • Suggest complementary products and confidently explain merchandise.
  • Operate the point-of-sale system and accurately process purchases, returns, discounts, gift cards, and other transactions.
  • Receive, price, unpack, organize, and stock new merchandise.
  • Restock shelves and displays throughout the day.
  • Create and refresh attractive book, home décor, gift, and seasonal displays.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and visually appealing sales floors, counters, shelves, and customer areas.
  • Monitor merchandise levels and notify management when products need to be reordered or replenished.
  • Assist with inventory counts, product labeling, special orders, and customer pickups.
  • Help prepare the store for promotions, holidays, author visits, and special events.
  • Follow opening, closing, cash-handling, merchandising, and store-security procedures.
  • Work cooperatively with other team members and assist wherever needed during busy periods.
  • Learn about new books, décor collections, store promotions, and services in order to assist customers confidently.
  • Help create the welcoming, helpful, and community-focused atmosphere that customers expect from The Beloved Book Co. and Monroe 816.
  • Social Media marketing as needed
Qualifications
  • Previous retail, customer service, bookselling, merchandising, or home décor experience is preferred.
  • Genuine interest in books, home décor, gift-giving, or creative merchandising.
  • Friendly, approachable, and comfortable starting conversations with customers.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to make recommendations without using high-pressure sales tactics.
  • Creative eye for color, styling, product placement, and display design.
  • Dependable, punctual, and committed to maintaining a consistent work schedule.
  • Self-motivated and able to recognize what needs to be done without constant direction.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage several responsibilities at once.
  • Comfortable learning and using a point-of-sale system, computers and other basic retail technology.
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.
  • Willingness to learn about merchandise across both the bookstore and home décor areas.
  • Professional, honest, and respectful when working with customers, coworkers, and store property.
Schedule Requirements
  • Permanent, year-round part-time position.
  • Consistent availability Tuesday through Friday is required.
  • Occasional Saturday and evening availability is also required for special events, holidays, and other scheduled store needs.
  • This position is best suited for someone who can reliably maintain the required schedule throughout the year.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during a shift.
  • Ability to bend, reach, climb a step stool, and safely move merchandise.
  • Ability to lift and carry boxes or merchandise weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to complete repetitive tasks such as unpacking, pricing, shelving, and restocking products.
Perks
  • Employee discounts
  • A creative and welcoming work environment.
  • Opportunities to discover new books, products, and decorating trends.
  • Varied responsibilities—no two days are exactly alike.
  • Opportunities to assist with displays, promotions, community activities, and special events.
  • The chance to work for two locally owned businesses that value hospitality, creativity, community, and meaningful customer relationships.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is someone who is equally comfortable discussing a favorite book, helping a customer put together a décor arrangement, ringing up a purchase, unpacking boxes, or straightening shelves. They take pride in the small details, enjoy making people feel welcome, and understand that excellent retail service includes both customer interaction and the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a store looking its best.
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who is reliable, enthusiastic, willing to learn, and able to consistently work the required Tuesday-through-Friday schedule all year long.
