Avalon Risk Management (“Avalon”) is a specialty insurance broker with offices in major port cities throughout the country. We focus on the unique and exciting world of risk management and insurance products for the international trade and logistics industry. We are looking for a reliable professional interested in growing into an Underwriter. This position works from our headquarters in Schaumburg, IL.


As an industry leader in the customs bond space, we are seeking an intermediate candidate with at least 3 years of direct customs bond underwriting or related surety experience, with current binding authority. The ideal candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to stay highly organized while consistently meeting deadlines. Our Surety Underwriters communicate with our offices, clients, insurance markets, and government agencies to gather and assess information for surety related coverage and bond renewals. Responsibilities include:

  • Underwriting bond risks within assigned parameters and authority
  • Drafting underwriting approval requests to reinsurers
  • Assisting agents and customers with various bond-related questions and regulations
  • Handling and/or assisting with bond insufficiency notifications
  • Managing bond supplies and requests
  • Handling and/or assisting with letters of credit and other collateral maintenance tasks
  • Preparing various management reports to manage surety program utilizing various software tools including Word, Excel, Access, etc. and our proprietary Merlin software
  • Work on special projects for reinsurance, collateral reviews, audits, etc.

Avalon is a premier provider of innovative insurance and surety solutions. This is a full-time, exempt (salaried) position with a starting base compensation range of $55,000 - $65,000 per year.
