These jobs can include positions such as deckhands, captains, engineers, fishing crew, tour guides, and maintenance workers. People in boat jobs may work on commercial vessels, fishing boats, ferries, yachts, or tour boats. The work environment can vary from open water to harbors and ports, and often requires specialized training or certifications. Boat jobs can offer unique opportunities for travel, teamwork, and hands-on experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a boat captain, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Boat Captain, you need strong navigational skills, maritime safety knowledge, and the appropriate captain’s license such as a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, radar, marine radios, and compliance with maritime regulations are essential technical requirements. Leadership, calm decision-making, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing crew and ensuring passenger safety. The Personal Lines Sales Agent at Davis Insurance Associates, Inc. is responsible for helping prospective clients find the right personal insurance coverage while growing the agency through new business sales.
This position focuses primarily on home, auto, umbrella, flood, and other personal insurance products. The ideal candidate is motivated, personable, organized, comfortable with technology, and able to guide clients through the insurance buying process from initial conversation through binding coverage.
This is a sales position, but we believe good insurance sales starts with listening to the client, understanding their needs, explaining coverage clearly, and recommending appropriate options rather than simply trying to sell the lowest-priced policy.
Benefits/Perks

  • Competitive Pay
  • Commission and/or Performance-Based Compensation
  • Paid Time Off
  • Professional Development and Training
  • Job Stability in a Growing Industry
  • Friendly, Team-Oriented Work Environment
  • Opportunities for Growth and Advancement
  • Access to Multiple Insurance Carriers and Markets
Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly to new personal insurance leads received by phone, email, website, referrals, and other agency marketing sources.
  • Speak with prospective clients to understand their insurance needs and gather the information necessary to prepare accurate quotes.
  • Quote personal insurance products including homeowners, auto, umbrella, flood, renters, condo, motorcycle, boat, golf cart, RV, and other personal lines coverage.
  • Compare coverage and pricing among multiple insurance carriers to identify appropriate options for each client.
  • Explain insurance coverage, deductibles, limits, exclusions, and available options in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Present quotes and recommendations to prospective clients and confidently ask for the sale.
  • Follow up consistently with prospects and maintain an organized sales pipeline.
  • Bind new policies and ensure required applications, signatures, payments, documents, and underwriting information are completed accurately.
  • Identify opportunities to round out accounts by offering additional coverage when appropriate.
  • Build long-term relationships with clients and provide a smooth transition to the agency's service team after the sale.
  • Document calls, emails, quotes, follow-up activity, and other client interactions in the agency's systems.
  • Meet individual sales, activity, and production goals.
  • Maintain knowledge of carrier underwriting guidelines, appetite, products, and changing market conditions.
  • Maintain required insurance licensing and continuing education.
  • Work closely with other sales agents, account managers, and agency leadership to provide an excellent client experience.
  • Assist with other sales-related projects and responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications

  • Active Property & Casualty insurance license is preferred. Candidates with strong sales ability who are willing and able to become licensed may also be considered.
  • Personal lines insurance experience is strongly preferred, but we are willing to consider candidates with a strong sales background and the ability to learn insurance quickly.
  • Previous experience quoting and selling homeowners and auto insurance is a plus.
  • Strong sales skills with the confidence to present recommendations, overcome objections, follow up, and ask for the sale.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Friendly, professional, and comfortable speaking with clients by phone, email, and in person.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to gather and enter information accurately.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and follow-up skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to manage multiple prospects and priorities at the same time.
  • Comfortable working toward sales and production goals.
  • Strong computer and technology skills and the ability to learn agency management systems, comparative raters, carrier websites, CRM software, and other technology.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also taking personal responsibility for individual production.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree is not required.
What Success Looks Like in This Role

A successful Personal Lines Sales Agent responds quickly to opportunities, follows up consistently, explains insurance in a way clients can understand, and helps clients make confident coverage decisions.
Success is not measured only by the number of quotes completed. We are looking for someone who can turn opportunities into long-term client relationships by providing good advice, recommending appropriate coverage, and making the insurance-buying process easy and professional.
The right person will be motivated by achieving sales goals while also doing what is best for the client.
