What is boat repair?

Boat repair refers to the maintenance, restoration, and fixing of various issues on boats, including the hull, engine, electrical systems, and other components. Technicians in this field work to ensure boats are safe, seaworthy, and in good working condition. Repairs can range from minor cosmetic fixes to major structural overhauls, and may involve working with materials like fiberglass, wood, or metal. Regular boat repair and maintenance are essential to extend the life of a vessel and prevent costly damages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a boat repair technician?

To thrive as a Boat Repair Technician, you need a solid understanding of marine mechanics, electrical systems, and materials such as fiberglass or wood, often gained through vocational training or marine certification programs. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, power tools, and boat-specific software systems is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication with clients make someone stand out in this position. These skills are crucial for ensuring safety, quality workmanship, and customer satisfaction in a specialized and potentially hazardous environment.

What are some common challenges faced by boat repair technicians when working on different types of vessels?

Boat repair technicians often encounter challenges related to the diversity of boat makes and models, each with unique construction materials and systems. Diagnosing issues on older or custom-built vessels can be particularly complex due to a lack of documentation or outdated parts. Additionally, working environments may vary, from marinas to dry docks, sometimes requiring repairs in tight or weather-exposed spaces. Technicians must also collaborate closely with boat owners, marine engineers, and suppliers to ensure repairs meet safety standards and customer expectations.

How to get a job as a boat repair?

To get a job as a boat repair technician, gain relevant skills through vocational training or apprenticeships in marine repair, and develop knowledge of boat systems, engines, and fiberglass work. Certification from organizations like the Marine Service Association can improve job prospects, and experience with tools such as welders and diagnostic equipment is often required. Entry-level positions may require a high school diploma or equivalent, with opportunities for advancement through hands-on experience and additional certifications.

Irish Boat Shop, Inc.

Love Boats? Skilled with Engines? Join a Crew That Gets It.
At Irish Boat Shop, we do more than fix boatsโ€”we help people enjoy the water. With over 60 years on the shores of Northern Michigan, weโ€™ve built a reputation for quality work, trusted relationships, and a strong team culture that values craftsmanship and character.
We're looking for a Certified Marine Mechanic to join our crew of professionals who take pride in their work and care about every detailโ€”because here, thatโ€™s what sets us apart.
What youโ€™ll do:
  • Diagnose and repair marine engines, drive systems, and onboard tech
  • Perform routine maintenance and seasonal service (commissioning amp; winterizing)
  • Tackle major jobs like repowers, rebuilds, and overhauls
  • Install new systems, troubleshoot issues, and upgrade older vessels
  • Keep detailed records (we like clean paperwork as much as clean installs)
  • Work safely with boats, trailers, and equipment in the yard and on the water
  • Jump in where neededโ€”because no one here says โ€œthatโ€™s not my jobโ€
What weโ€™re looking For:
  • 5+ years of experience as a marine technician
  • Current certifications (ABYC, NMMA, or OEM-specific training required)
  • Solid understanding of schematics, manuals, and diagnostic tools
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work outdoors year-round
  • Great communication skillsโ€”youโ€™re good with both teammates and customers
  • A valid driverโ€™s license and a clean driving record
Why Irish Boat Shop?
  • Competitive wages based on experience and certifications
  • Health insurance, retirement plan, and other full-time benefits
  • A waterfront workplace (yes, really) with beautiful locations
  • Off-season flexibility and a strong year-round team
  • Ongoing training and advancement opportunities
  • A company culture that respects your time, your talent, and your goals
If youโ€™re a certified tech who loves working on boats and wants to be part of a team that values quality, trust, and doing things the right wayโ€”this is your kind of shop.
Full-time position | Great benefits | Room to grow | Work that matters
