Job Description This hourly position is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of Town vehicles, equipment, and related systems to ensure safe and reliable fleet operations. Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on a variety of light-duty vehicles, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, small engines, trailers, and specialized equipment. Utilizes diagnostic equipment, fleet management software, and technical resources to complete accurate and timely repairs and maintenance documentation.

Performs welding and fabrication work in support of vehicle, equipment, and infrastructure maintenance. Coordinates and communicates with Town staff, vendors, and other departments to support operational fleet needs. Positions at higher levels may perform more advanced diagnostics, repairs, technical guidance, and specialized assignments with greater independence and complexity.

General: Essential Functions Performs preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and mechanical repair services on Town-owned vehicles and equipment including light-duty vehicles, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, trailers, small engines, and related attachments and tools. Diagnoses and troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and related system issues using diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, schematics, and computer-based diagnostic systems. Repairs, replaces, and installs mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and specialized components, accessories, and equipment on Town fleet vehicles and equipment.

Performs welding and fabrication work utilizing Mig and Arc welding techniques to repair and maintain vehicles, equipment, attachments, and Town infrastructure. Follows preventative maintenance schedules and prioritizes repair activities to ensure fleet reliability, operational readiness, and compliance with applicable safety and regulatory requirements. Maintains accurate and timely work orders, maintenance records, inspection reports, labor documentation, and parts usage records utilizing fleet management software and related systems.

Inspects, maintains, diagnoses, and repairs above-ground and underground petroleum storage tanks and fuel systems as assigned. Maintains inventory levels of parts, fluids, oils, chemicals, and related supplies; researches and requisitions materials and parts from approved vendors. Collaborates with supervisors, technicians, operators, and vendors to resolve maintenance issues, coordinate repairs, and obtain necessary parts and services.

Maintains a clean, organized, and safe shop environment, storage yard, and work areas in accordance with safety standards and operational procedures. Operates vehicles, equipment, tools, lifts, and machinery safely and in accordance with training, policies, and applicable regulations. Uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), identifies and reports unsafe conditions, and complies with all safety procedures and departmental policies.

Maintains regular and reliable attendance and responds to operational and emergency fleet maintenance needs as required. General: Marginal Functions Assists other Public Works divisions with project-specific assignments and operational support activities. Operates specialized equipment in support of departmental or cross-functional projects as assigned.

Assists with street maintenance, grounds maintenance, snow removal operations, and other seasonal or emergency response activities when necessary. Provides general assistance with shop organization, facility upkeep, and related support duties. Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Level One Two Three Level Responsibilities: Essential Functions Learns and follows established shop safety procedures, proper PPE usage, safe lifting techniques, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe work practices under the guidance of senior technicians or supervisors. Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area, shop space, tools, and equipment. Performs basic preventative maintenance services including oil changes, fluid checks, lubrication, filter replacement, and routine inspections on Town vehicles and equipment.

Mounts, balances, rotates, and inspects tires and performs basic tire plug and patch repairs under guidance. Assists with and performs replacement of common suspension wear components under supervision. Performs basic brake maintenance and repair including disc brake service and replacement of common brake wear items under guidance.

Identifies common engine components, fluids, leaks, and maintenance needs during inspections and preventative maintenance activities. Safely jump-starts vehicles and equipment, replaces batteries, and performs basic electrical system checks under supervision. Identifies leaking or damaged hydraulic hoses, fittings, and components and assists with hydraulic repairs and component replacement under supervision.

Performs basic fabrication support activities including cutting, grinding, material preparation, and shop cleanup tasks. Utilizes hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and diagnostic equipment safely and appropriately for assigned tasks. Completes assigned work orders, inspection forms, and maintenance documentation accurately and timely.

Communicates professionally with supervisors, technicians, and Town staff regarding maintenance needs and assigned work. Maintains regular and reliable attendance and complies with all departmental policies and procedures. Maintains safe, clean, and organized work practices and assists in reinforcing shop safety procedures, PPE usage, and safe equipment operation for lower-level staff.

Performs preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repair services on Town vehicles, fleet equipment, and related systems with limited supervision. Performs tire mounting, balancing, inspections, plug and patch repairs, and diagnoses abnormal or advanced tire wear on fleet vehicles and equipment, including DOT-related tire inspections and repairs as assigned. Diagnoses, repairs, and replaces suspension system components on light-, medium-, and heavy-duty fleet vehicles and equipment independently, including DOT-related suspension work as assigned.

Services, diagnoses, repairs, and adjusts disc, drum, and air brake systems, including DOT-related brake inspections and repairs as assigned. Diagnoses and repairs major gasoline engine systems and components and assists with diesel engine diagnostics and repair activities. Diagnoses and repairs common vehicle and equipment electrical systems including batteries, charging systems, lighting systems, starters, wiring, and related components.

Builds hydraulic hoses and performs intermediate hydraulic diagnostics, maintenance, and repair on hydraulic systems and components. Performs intermediate-level welding, fabrication, cutting, grinding, and repair of damaged or broken vehicle, equipment, and infrastructure components. Utilizes diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, schematics, and computer-based systems to troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical issues.

Completes work orders, inspection reports, maintenance documentation, and parts tracking accurately and timely utilizing fleet management software. Coordinates with supervisors, technicians, operators, and vendors to identify repair needs and obtain necessary parts and materials. Maintains regular and reliable attendance and responds to operational and emergency fleet maintenance needs as required.

Provides technical leadership and guidance to lower-level technicians by reinforcing safe shop practices, proper repair procedures, and departmental operational standards. Instructs and mentors lower-level mechanics in troubleshooting, repair techniques, shop safety procedures, and proper use of tools and diagnostic equipment. Develops, maintains, and enforces standards for shop organization, cleanliness, efficiency, and safe work practices.

Performs advanced preventative maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair services on Town vehicles, heavy equipment, and specialized fleet systems with a high degree of independence. Performs all lower-level tire and wheel maintenance and repair activities and services heavy-duty, commercial, and non-automotive wheel and tire systems. Diagnoses, repairs, rebuilds, and replaces advanced suspension system components including struts and specialized suspension assemblies.

Diagnoses and repairs advanced disc, drum, and air brake systems and performs brake-related recovery procedures including brake caging, tow support, and emergency roadside repair assistance as needed. Performs advanced gasoline and diesel engine diagnostics, troubleshooting, overhaul, repair, and performance testing. Diagnoses and repairs complex 12-volt and 24-volt electrical systems including wiring, charging systems, controls, sensors, modules, aftertreatment systems, and related electronic components.

Utilizes advanced diagnostic software, computerized diagnostic equipment, schematics, and manufacturer-specific service programs to troubleshoot and repair fleet systems and equipment. Performs advanced hydraulic and hydrostatic system diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, and component replacement. Performs advanced welding, fabrication, arc welding, and custom repair or fabrication of components, attachments, brackets, and specialized equipment.

Reviews, completes, and verifies accurate work orders, inspection reports, repair documentation, and fleet maintenance records utilizing fleet management software. Coordinates complex repairs and technical issues with supervisors, vendors, operators, and outside service providers. Maintains regular and reliable attendance and responds to operational, emergency, and after-hours fleet maintenance needs as required.

Level One Two Three Marginal Duties Assists senior mechanics and technicians with advanced diagnostics and repair work. Assists with shop organization, inventory activities, and stocking of parts and supplies. Provides support for seasonal operations, emergency response activities, and Public Works projects as assigned.

Operates basic shop and fleet equipment under supervision and training. Participates in training opportunities to develop technical knowledge and mechanical skills. Assists senior technicians with advanced diagnostics and major repair projects.

Provides guidance and technical support to entry-level mechanics and shop staff. Assists with inventory control, parts procurement, and organization of shop supplies and materials. Supports Public Works operations, seasonal assignments, snow removal, and emergency response activities as assigned.

Operates specialized equipment and tools in support of maintenance and repair operations. Participates in technical training and skill development activities to maintain certifications and enhance mechanical knowledge. Assists with training, onboarding, and skill development of new or lower-level mechanics and technicians.

Recommends improvements to shop procedures, equipment maintenance practices, and operational efficiencies. Assists supervisors with prioritization of workload, project coordination, and technical evaluation of repairs and equipment conditions. Supports Public Works operations, emergency response activities, snow removal, and cross-departmental assignments as needed.

Assists with parts sourcing, vendor coordination, inventory management, and evaluation of replacement equipment or tools. Operates specialized fleet equipment and machinery in support of departmental operations and projects. Participates in advanced technical training and certification programs to maintain current industry knowledge and compliance requirements.

Serves as supervisor or lead worker in the absence of management by overseeing daily shop operations, coordinating workflow, addressing operational issues, and providing direction to staff as assigned.
