What is a Bloomberg Python developer?

A Bloomberg Python developer is a software engineer who specializes in using Python to build, maintain, and enhance applications or tools that interact with Bloomberg's financial data and platforms. These developers often work on data analytics, automation, and integration projects, making use of Bloomberg's APIs and data feeds. Their role typically involves writing efficient code, processing large datasets, and ensuring the reliability and accuracy of financial data workflows. They may also collaborate closely with financial analysts, data scientists, and other technology teams. Strong knowledge of both Python programming and financial markets is usually required for this position.

How does a Bloomberg Python Developer typically collaborate with other teams and stakeholders within the organization?

Bloomberg Python Developers frequently work in cross-functional teams, collaborating closely with financial analysts, data engineers, and product managers to deliver robust data solutions. Daily interactions often involve gathering requirements, discussing data integration challenges, and reviewing code with peers to ensure high-quality outputs. Since Bloomberg's environment is highly dynamic, developers need to be adept at communicating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and responding quickly to feedback or changing business needs. This collaborative approach helps ensure that Python-based tools and applications align with both technical standards and business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bloomberg Python Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bloomberg Python Developer, you need strong programming skills in Python, knowledge of financial markets, and experience with Bloomberg APIs or terminal integration. Familiarity with data analysis libraries (like pandas, NumPy), Bloomberg’s proprietary tools, and sometimes certifications such as CFA or relevant Bloomberg certifications are valuable. These skills ensure efficient development of financial solutions, accurate data handling, and effective collaboration with financial professionals.

Description & Requirements
Who are we?
Bloomberg is the global leader in business and financial data, news, and insights. Using the power of technology, we connect the world's decision-makers to accurate information on the financial markets and help them make faster, smarter decisions.
What is the challenge?
Bloomberg's Python-based data science platform, BQuant, helps our customers carry out financial analysis at scale. Combining the power of Python and cloud computing with Bloomberg's proprietary data and APIs, BQuant lets financial professionals break free from the limitations of spreadsheet-based workflows, whether through creating applications or building and testing models in code. As AI transforms the competitive landscape, we need to continue evolving the BQuant user experience to keep pace with the changing needs and expectations of our customers.
What will you do?
We are looking for an Experienced UX Designer to help drive forward the early ideation and eventual execution of enhancements to BQuant. BQuant is a complex product, so your projects will address a wide range of user problems, ranging from managing compute usage and integrating AI code assistants through to application publishing workflows and the design of APIs. You'll participate in ideation exercises that shape the longer-term vision for the product, while also collaborating closely with engineers on the execution of your design concepts.
You will combine strategic and detailed-oriented user experience design skills with an ability to define and lead user research projects. Over time, your awareness of Bloomberg's rich product ecosystem will grow, helping you to contextualize your design proposals and find cross-platform synergies that can create value for our customers. You will find ways to apply new technologies and tools to improve and accelerate the design process itself, and you will have an opportunity to shape a range of product interfaces, both programmatic and graphical.
Who will you work with
  • To effectively tackle these challenges, you will partner closely with:
  • Other UX designers and researchers working on BQuant and across the wider suite of Bloomberg products
  • Product Managers and Engineers on the BQuant team
  • Sales and other customer-facing teams who provide valuable insights into customer opportunities and pain points
  • Program Managers who maintain the product roadmap and manage delivery.

You'll need to have
  • Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in HCI, Interaction Design, Information Architecture, Visual Communication, or any design-related field
  • 4+ years of experience in several of the following: user research, designing for complex user workflows, service design, product design, interaction design, UI and visual design, and prototyping
  • Familiarity with core concepts and interaction design challenges related to cloud computing and IDEs
  • A track record of applying standard User-Centered research and design practices and tools to solve challenging design problems
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Curiosity and aptitude to extensively research existing and emerging best practices in the field of HCI/UX
  • Enthusiasm for shaping the user experience across all product surfaces, not just graphical interfaces.

Financial domain experience is an advantage, but not essential for this role.
Portfolio
We are interested in reviewing two of your design projects in detail for this position. We would like to see artifacts from across the full project lifecycle. This may include, but should not be limited to: user research, personas, sketches, user journeys, task flows, wireframes, storyboards, success metrics, etc. We are interested in seeing detailed wireframes illustrating a step-by-step user workflow for solutions that solve complex problems. We would like to see how your process informed your design choices.
Please do not, without proper consent, share or disclose to Bloomberg any confidential or proprietary information that you may have obtained in connection with employment with any other employer, or which may be considered the Work Product of any other individual or entity.
Salary Range = 160,000 - 210,000 USD Annual + Benefits + Bonus
