Job description

Blood Bank Laboratory Supervisor

Location: Boston, MA
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM, rotating weekends
Compensation: $90,000–$120,000 annually + $15,000 Sign-On Bonus

About the Opportunity

A respected healthcare organization in the Boston area is seeking an experienced Blood Bank Laboratory Supervisor to oversee daily operations within a high-volume transfusion services department. This leadership opportunity is ideal for a skilled laboratory professional who enjoys mentoring staff, optimizing workflows, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient testing services.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise, prior leadership experience, and a commitment to regulatory compliance and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise the daily operations of the Blood Bank department.
  • Ensure laboratory testing is performed accurately and results are reported in a timely manner.
  • Train, mentor, and provide ongoing support to laboratory personnel.
  • Monitor workflow and staffing levels to ensure adequate coverage across all shifts.
  • Coordinate scheduling and assist with workforce planning.
  • Investigate and resolve technical, quality, and production-related issues.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, quality, and service levels.
  • Oversee quality control activities and ensure proper instrument maintenance.
  • Maintain quality assurance documentation and regulatory records.
  • Evaluate new procedures, technologies, and process improvements.
  • Conduct regular performance discussions and provide coaching to direct reports.
  • Perform bench work as needed while maintaining technical competency.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, accreditation, and laboratory regulations.
  • Assist with policy implementation, payroll processing, personnel documentation, and other administrative functions.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical laboratory experience as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Laboratory Technician.
  • Previous Lead, Senior Technologist, or Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • ASCP or AMT certification preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Blood Bank operations and regulatory requirements, including CLIA, CAP, and applicable state regulations.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
  • Capable of meeting the physical demands associated with a clinical laboratory setting.
